17-year-old Brandon Canoville lost his life in a harrowing traffic incident which occurred weeks ago.

The circumstances surrounding his death paint a somber picture of a young life cut short in a desperate attempt to avoid a catastrophic collision.

The tragic incident unfolded on Friars Hill Road, where Canoville was riding his bicycle.

Faced with the danger of being crushed by a truck’s wheels, Canoville made a split-second decision to jump from his bicycle.

The consequence of this was a series of severe injuries, including traumatic head trauma, ultimately leading to his admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Canoville’s battle for life unfolded in the ICU at Sir Lester Bird Medical Center, where medical professionals worked tirelessly to save him.

  1. Friars Hill Road again!!!

The name of this road comes up time and time again when it involves traffic accidents, collisions and deaths.

Is it poor lighting? Narrow roads? Potholing issues? Or simply – as in the past – bad driving?

Whatever it is, the Minister for Public Works now needs to take a serious look into this matter urgently, before another tragedy takes place on this highly dangerous road.

  2. While in Antigua last year.I was cutoff so many times by other drivers on that Road. They drive without care for other drivers on that Road. There needs to be more Police presence on that well travelled Road.Giving tickets to those who do obey the Laws of the Roads.

  3. So sad. Prayers for the family. Gone too soon

The article states he lost his life in a traffic incident however seems to me that he lost his life due to a traffic indicent. I say this because he did not die on the spot but weeks after.

    • Ok…technicality, one can say it wasn’t a traffic death but a jumping injury
      I can’t say, I wasn’t there
The round about though at the GGhouse is bypassed by HugeEmpty trucks whose drivers don’t seem to care how fast they drive. Yesterday afternoon was particularly disturbing.

RIP youngster. May CHSS always remember the indelible mark he made. Condolences to his parents.

  4. Dem truck man and bus man drive like they own road. Pull their license permanently. Make them pay for the victims even if it mean taking away dem property.

  5. They rather give you wrongfully placed palm trees at the side of the road for 400,000 than to give you bicycle lanes or even side walks.

  6. We spent so much on those roads and not one of the powers that be attempted to include a bike lane, especially since this is our incident with bikers loosing life

  7. Walk good youngster. Such an awful way to lose your life. May your family and friends be comforted as they mourn your tragic and untimely passing.

  8. We need to promote ..safety .. was he wearing a helmet .. also .. it is unfortunate but the hospital in Antigua is not equipped to deal with this kind of trauma … so if you have severe trauma in Antigua .. you will eventually die … opposed to other countries .. in Antigua we did when if you are equipped you don’t have to die

  9. All these comments fail to recognize that Antiguans seem poorly trained to drive from the beginning.
You all seem to,,when making a right,,pull extreme left of the roadway,to then almost, turn the car sideways,,to make the right turn.
( PULL AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO CENTER LINE,,KEEPING WHEELS STRAIGHT,,WAITING TO TURN WHEN ABLE )
Most when making a turn, will indicate,, making the turn,,just as they’ve already started to turn,,,
( TURN SIGNAL SHOULD BE DEPLOYED 100ft MINIMUM,,FROM TURN) if they do use the turn signal,at all.
    You park anywhere,,then pull off,,without ,, signaling.
You stop and have,,roadway chats,,,with empty park spaces,,8ft away.
You pull onto roadways,,in front,,of oncoming traffic, flowing at 20mph to do 3mph,,instead of waiting.
I could go on and on and on,,as to why,,I an Antiguan,,has come to the conclusion;POOR DRIVERS EDUCATION,,,from conception.

They will do everything to cover up what is happening to these young people……the people knew what happened and what happened to him ……ask his mom what happened???

  11. Since the Friars Hill has been resurfaced, the speeding by drivers is deafening. I have experienced poor driving in that road many times on my journey northbound. They’re always in a hurry to go nowhere. So sorry that he had to make that spilt second decision. Rest in peace, young man.

  12. First I must sympathize with family and loved ones.
I’ve noticed time and time again , some drivers only think about themselves when they are behind the wheel, they would indicate when they are right there at the turn off, would not indicate, brake sudden, would overtake unnecessary ect ! So many accidents on the road because someone is in a hurry. Think road users !
    Just saying!

  13. I can remember when I was attending secondary school, one of our class mates died suddenly and he was only fifteen. He was such a brilliant and handsome young man. Our principal said that only the good die young. I can remember his name to this day. His name was Horatio Bart. We, his class mates, were traumatized, especially when his father cried so hard and collapsed at the grave. I had never seen a grown man cried before. Sometimes god takes the best. May his family and friends find peace.
