A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck the Eastern Caribbean on Friday afternoon, according to preliminary data released by the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC).

The tremor occurred at approximately 1:31 p.m. local time (17:31 UTC), with an epicentre located at latitude 17.59°N and longitude 62.06°W, at a depth of 33 kilometres.

The quake’s epicentre was situated roughly 58 kilometres northwest of Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, 81 kilometres northeast of Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and 90 kilometres north-northeast of Brades, Montserrat.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The UWI SRC noted that this location was automatically generated using computer algorithms and remains subject to revision following review by seismologists.

Residents across the region, particularly in Antigua, Montserrat and St. Kitts and Nevis, have reported feeling the shaking. Earthquakes of this magnitude are generally not expected to cause significant structural damage, though they can be felt over a wide area.

  1. I was at sea so I missed out on all the excitement. Our friends in Barbuda would have felt it pretty good since the epicenter was around 14 miles to the west of Codrington. Just another reminder to always be prepared for the unexpected.

  2. I never felt any of these earth quakes, the last one was 1974, and I felt a small one in the BVI. The oil suspension for these tectonic plates has been removed by greedy men destroying our planet for cash, it causes the water table to recede deeper into the earth so wells are drying out and the tectonic plates are falling from there positions, our beautiful earth is destroyed for money.
