Amid rising concerns over nudity during Carnival celebrations, Minister of National Festivals, Daryl Matthew, stressed the importance of personal responsibility and rejected calls for government regulation of morality.
Speaking at a press conference, Matthew highlighted that while the issue is troubling, behavior cannot be legislated.
Matthew, who once participated in local mas troupes, expressed his unease with some participants’ attire and behavior, questioning the event’s suitability for children. His remarks sparked debate on social media, with groups like the Christian Council advocating for more modesty during Carnival.
The Minister urged young women to maintain decency, reflecting on the broader implications for the Black community’s image.
Meanwhile, Director of National Festivals, Petley O’Keiffe, emphasized the need for enhanced security measures for Antigua Carnival 2024, including increased police presence and improved surveillance. The Carnival is set to take place from July 27 to August 8.

This nudity is not just confined to carnival in Antigua and Barbuda but to similar festivals the world over. Carnival everywhere is now so hypersexual especially in the costumes, dances, dress and music.
Looking back at the 70’s and 80’s carnival, it had more of a cultural flavour. Floats, costumes, music and dances were dedicated to telling the story of our islands and their cultural aspect. Carnival now is about whining and dancing and gyrating with as little clothes as possible. The less clothes now the better it seem. While it might be fun for those participating, it greatly overshadows the true and traditional aspect of carnival.

When mas troupes like Myst, Insane, Barefoot and many other encourage their patrons to do as they like, this will be the ending. Carnival always had women and men not fully dressed. But, the nudity part, anyone remember when Myst was launched? Who were the partners……until one of them even became coordinator of carnival too…..then the women in two piece and fries became legendary. ….with the rum truck and young women passing out in the streets, WOW! Everything is subjected! Our parents were more covered, we wore less clothing, now our successors are exposing less nudity. As long as sexual organs aren’t publicly exposed, people have a right to personal expression without legal intervention.
