Minister promises to rid airwaves of “filth and smut”

Broadcasting Minister Melford Nicholas

Information and Broadcasting Minister Melford Nicholas says he’s considering additional legislation to monitor the content of radio stations.

Nicholas told the launch of the politically aligned Pointe FM that he’s not pleased with some of the music being played by some local radio stations.

“I have noticed a trend in broadcast media where a lot of filth and smut are being played on our radio stations all too freely and I think it impairs and perverts our young minds,” Nicholas said.

He did not identify the offenders but said Pointe FM which is owned by Prime Minister Gaston Browne is not one of them.

“Having a radio station is an important responsibility,” the minister said adding, “my ministry as an oversight ministry has a responsibility to ensure that its effective use is done in a manner that it is not abused.”

Nicholas says he has already discussed his concerns at the Cabinet level and a few times in the parliament.

“At the appropriate time we may need to look at other forms of legislation to ensure that we have responsible use of the media,” he said.

When we immerse our young minds in filth and smut rather than raisng effective citizens I think it can really lay some fertile minds to waste
