Pointe Xpress – Amid growing concerns over limited land availability, Maria Browne, the Minister of Housing, Lands, and Urban Renewal in Antigua and Barbuda, has introduced the ‘Land Empowerment Programme’ (LEP).

The program was expanded from the previous ‘Land for Youth’ initiative to be more inclusive and accessible to a broader range of citizens.

Under the LEP, individuals can obtain land at a reduced rate of three dollars per square foot in various locations across the country.

Minister Browne refuted claims of land scarcity and highlighted the government’s commitment to making over 4,000 parcels available, particularly for low-income earners and first-time landowners.(OBSERVER)

  1. Great news, thank you. The government announces lots of great programmes, but sometimes it’s hard to figure out how to participate. I hope they will have an informative website outlining the process clearly for those interested.
Also, the government should consider buying up some of the expensive houses and apartments that are often sitting around empty and reselling them at a lower price to individuals or to companies who commit to keep the prices of the rentals low enough to match local salaries. Some apartments could even be sold as condos with low monthly fees charged for maintenance etc.
