Controversy Surrounds Demolition of Peter Kelsick’s Business on Dickenson Bay

A longstanding business owned by Peter Kelsick, located prominently in front of the new Royalton CHIC resort on Dickenson Bay, was recently dismantled, sparking a flurry of discussions and legal threats.

This move came after negotiations between Kelsick and Royalton apparently broke down.

Minister of Tourism, Charles Fernandez, has shed light on the situation, explaining that Kelsick opted to exit his business and sought substantial compensation instead of accepting an offer to rebuild and relocate.

According to Fernandez, Kelsick’s initial compensation demand was “extortionate,” setting the stage for intense negotiations.

Royalton, on their part, reportedly agreed to a final payout of $180,000 after negotiations that started with Kelsick asking for $1 million.

This agreement came as Kelsick decided not to re-enter the business, a decision he made clear during his discussions with Royalton, indicating his preference for a payout over continuing his operations.

The Ministry of Tourism noted that Kelsick had not been in active communication with them about his situation.

“Peter never contacted us directly about the negotiations. My understanding is that he was directly dealing with Royalton, and they had reached an agreement,” Fernandez said.

Despite the agreement with Royalton, Kelsick allegedly expressed to Fernandez his expectation of additional compensation from the government, citing his long tenure at the location.

However, Fernandez pointed out that Kelsick had not paid rent or taxes for the use of the land, which should be considered compensation in itself. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATS APP GROUP

Kelsick’s business, a fixture on Dickenson Bay for over 40 years, was described by the minister as being in a dilapidated state and not contributing aesthetically to the beachfront, which is now adorned with new amenities and facilities provided by the Royalton resort.

This situation has raised questions about the rights and compensations due to local entrepreneurs displaced by development projects and the responsibilities of both the government and foreign corporations in ensuring fair negotiations and transitions.
