Independent Member of the Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda, the Hon. Anthony Smith Jr., on Wednesday attended his first cabinet meeting under the leadership of Prime Minister Gaston Browne following his appointment as Minister of Agriculture, Land, Fisheries and the Blue Economy.

Prime Minister Browne welcomed Minister Smith to the Cabinet and noted that every member of the Cabinet participated in the decision to make him a Cabinet Member following his resignation from the Opposition United Progressive Party benches in parliament on Monday.

“Everyone is committed to providing you with the type of mentoring that you will require.  You came into the Cabinet with the full consensus of everyone here.  We are happy to have you onboard and look forward to a productive relationship,” pointed out Prime Minister Browne.

Minister Smith thanked the Hon. Prime Minister and the members of the Cabinet for their confidence and outlined that he is grateful for the opportunity given to him.

“I want every member of this team to know that I am committed to the team and country.  I come from a private sector background where I have worked all my life and it’s my first time working in government, so I know I have a lot to learn.  I am here to listen and learn from all of you.”

Minister Anthony Smith will make his first appearance in the House of Representatives on Thursday as an Independent Member.  On Friday he will commence meetings with Heads of Department of the Ministry.

  1. Congratulations on your appointment Hon Minister Smith! Blessings for upward and forward mobility. Make our community of Antigua & Barbuda proud!

  2. Politics is all about power, ask the Donald who knows he will be powerless if he lost and the consequences, so he will continue to fight to regain that power. You win your seat and sit in Parliament, but as a young politician it’s hard sitting on the opposition side for a whole term knowing the true power is not there, especially in these parts where it’s all about the government, ABLP ministers and the many benefits they have. One may make a number of promises to his or her constituency but when you can’t deliver, the wining only set you the MP up for life, while the people who voted for you sits, look and wait. Look at Asot! you think he’s happy sitting as an independent? and by the way not one manifesto promise up and running yet.

  3. Well it’s gonna be one rude awakening mr smith.
Govt is so different from private sector. Now first, where is the hq of Ministry of agriculture, are they still displaced? You are going to be taking some strong pressure pills soon !!!

  4. Congrats. Expect you to show the skills many who support you claim you have. Who knows, your move may actually help UPP to have the the intropsection they should have going back as far as when they divorced themselves from Tim Hector

  5. It is important that we all make every effort to support the Minister. His Ministry is extremely important to our nation. If we can’t feed ourselves in this life we are doomed. More and more we feel that every day we are alive. I wish the MP and his Ministry nothing but the best.

  6. INDEPENDENT MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT? …GRATUITOUS ACHIEVEMENT?

In this news story the word ‘…INDEPENDENT’ Member of Parliament seemed to be incorrectly used.

    DISTINCTION

The ‘…DISTINCTION’ might be easily understood from the ‘…Parliamentary Status’ of the Parliamentary Member for ‘…St. Peter, Asot Michael.’

    WHY?

    (a) ‘His ‘Candidacy’ was one of ‘…INDEPENDENCE;’
    (b) …He was not affiliated to any ‘…GROUP;’
    (c) …His ‘Parliamentary Support’ came only from the constituents, more precisely, the
    ‘ELLIGIBLE VOTERS.’
    (d) …They endorsed his ‘Candidacy’ as an ‘…Independent Candidate;’

    CONTRASTINGLY

The ‘…Honorable Anthony Smith Jr’ appears not be so positioned in making such ‘CLAIM’ THAT:
    (a) ‘…He independently contested the same ‘…General Elections’ as ‘…INDEPENDENT
    …PARLIAMENTARY MEMBER, Honorable Asot Michael.’
    (b) …Even with the constituency and electoral support, he could never claim that he
entered the contest as ‘…an INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE; and
    (c) …So declared winner as such.

    RESPECT CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT OF ASSOCIATION

Well, ‘…Treason or Treachery; …Trickery or skullduggery,’ he has exercised his ‘…Constitutional Right of ‘…Freedom of Association’ [CO: 1981: Section 13].

More than any other time, he now appears to be better positioned to assist in the development of the areas he then, and still represents, both; (i) ‘…Cabinet Minister; and (ii) Still a Member of Parliament.’

    CONGRATULATIONS:
Not necessarily for the apparent ‘…QUESTIONABLE MOTIVE AND BEHAVIOR’, that seemed bordering ‘…TREACHERY,’ though. But for the clearly ‘…GRATUITOUS ACHIEVEMENT.’

  7. So…. How you embrace this “other independent “ why is AS you have so much interest in AFTERALL is the “ other independent “ made YOU GASTON WHO YOU ARE FOR-TODAY…..

WHY you Gaston have so much interest in AS
If he so “INDEPENDENT” why is he at ALP
    WHY ALP ALL OVER HIM

ISNT AN INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE SHOULD BE INDEPENDENT OF EITHER PARTY???

  8. Mr. Pompey I have read your comment. Anthony Smith was elected to Parliament on the UPP ticket and he has subsequently resigned from the Party. He is still a member of Parliament however. Can you please tell what word you would now use to describe Smith’s status in Parliament? If he is not now an “Independent” member of Parliament, I would like to know the word that you would coin to describe his current parliamentary status?

  9. Trust you had a very exiting first day on the job. And then tomorrow your first day as an independent Parliamentarian.
Once again I wish you all the best in your job and hope and trust that you will have the skills to work with all those public servants from the UPP in the ministry. Because them will give you a hard time for sure. And you will find out that working in the Private Sector and working in the Public Sector are two different things. You may get frustrated, but you have good mentors to advise you. Good luck Anthony.

  10. How could he be independent? When he is being controlled by Gaston Browne and the ABLP.He was with the UPP and now ABLP.

  11. Wow, wow, wow, and another wow. Do you know, if I promised to repay owed money and I can’t make the deadline, do you know that I can’t sleep at night? I hide from the person any which way I can. Boy, my god. Judas had to kill himself. He couldn’t live with his betrayal. What do we tell our children? How do we sit in church? When and how do we grow forked tongues. Dis waan yah ah baffle me.
