Michael remains suspended from the House of Representatives, as Speaker awaits court ruling to determine the way forward

REAL NEWS – Independent Member of Parliament Asot Michael remains suspended from the House of Representatives as the House Speaker awaits a ruling from the High Court.

Michael was “suspended” during the May 18 sitting of the Lower House reportedly for being disrespectful to the Speaker by disobeying a directive not to engage in cross-talk.

His suspension is for three consecutive sittings.

However, the MP has challenged the Speaker’s ruling by filing a constitutional motion in the Court. The MP claims that the action was a breach of several of his constitutional rights.

House Speaker Sir Gerald Watt – in updating the House on the matter on Thursday, July 27 – said that his attorney, Dr. David Dorsett, has filed a motion to have the matter thrown out.

The motion to dismiss was heard just over 10 days ago, with the presiding judge promising to have a decision before the next sitting of the House, which initially was set for Tuesday, July 25.

However, up to Thursday, the ruling remained outstanding; and Michael, through his attorney, sought to have the Speaker allow him to attend this sitting.

The Speaker told the House that he had not suspended the MP; rather, the suspension was effected through a Motion by the House.

That explanation caused the Member for All Saints East and St. Luke, Jamale Pringle, to rise on a point of elucidation, asking Sir Gerald which Member had moved the motion to have MP Michael suspended.

However, Sir Gerald said he refused to entertain the Opposition Leader, stating that the Speaker’s announcements do not require any such elucidation, based on the Standing Orders.

Watt further advised Pringle to consult the Standing Orders – the handbook of parliamentary procedures – to confirm his earlier decision. In the meantime, Sir Gerald said he is mindful of the current workload of the judge, and he has promised to keep the House informed when the decision on MP Michael’s matter is handed down.

  1. I recall only hearing the speakers voice when he suspended Asot Muchael so what motion from other members is he talking about. Speaker watts must be hearing voices in his head. Bring back Asot M7chael. Speaker was wrong again. Please resign.

    • WHAT MOTION? …FIGMENT OF IMAGINATION: …SPEAKER DID NOT REMEMBER

      Good observation, commenter.

It appears a ‘…Figment of Imagination,’ for the ‘House Speaker’ to remind ‘…House Members’ of their ‘Procedural Folly.’

‘The Member’s only voted on the ‘Suspension Penalty,’ when ‘NO MEMBER’ ever:’

      (a) ‘…Moved a Motion: and

      (b) … None seconded the Motion.’

      KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN:

Those whom the ‘…House Speaker’ seemingly believed were ‘…Kindergarten Children,’ he only put to them the: ‘…THREE SITTINGS SUSPENSION.’

That was what they voted for, ‘…NOT MOTION.’

      QUESTION:

How much longer must they allow the ‘…House Speaker’ to show the ‘…House Membership’ to the nation as: ‘…NINCOMPOOPS?’

Likened to how those ‘Children’ would respond to the Teacher, the ‘…HOUSE MAJORITY’ so voted [ABS/ANR: YouTube Video: May 18, 2023].

Darn ‘…House Speaker’ did not remember.

  2. This political farce has to stop now.

Asot Michael’s punishment just doesn’t fit the “alleged” Parliamentary crime.

This is just a nasty tactic and punishment, because Mr Michael soundly defeated an ABLP candidate in one of their “safe” seats; and trying to silence his voice on the behalf of the constituents that voted for him is plain vengeful, venomous and vindictive.

    THIS ISN’T DEMOCRACY. TARL!

The tripartite will prolong this wilful ban for as long as they see fit, making an absolute mockery of our Parliamentary proceedings.

    • @BRIXTONIAN….Why don’t you take a deep breath before making these STUPID statements. It shows that you are definitely very jealous of the. Hon. Gaston Browne. BRIXTONIAN it shows that your are a born loser.

Hon.Gaston Browne will dismantle the UPP. The latest strategic move by Hon.Gaston Browne is Dwayne George from St. Mary’s South. I heard Dwayne George in an interview with Darren Matthew Ward. Dwayne said that the UPP is an AWFUL party to be a part of…They do not respect the talent of Their members. This seem to be the same pronouncement from all the members of the UPP. He also said that the OLD Executive body needs to resign. BRIXTONIAN and UPP are AWFUL.

      • @ GORD

you are so stupid and gullible- do you expect Mr George to say anything else when we all know that part of the arrangement with turn-coats is for them to bear their soul and praise the ABLP/GASTON and lambast the UPP?
Only two weeks ago Mr George was on a UPP platform extolling the virtue of Shuggy and showing up the incompetence of the ABLP/Samantha Marshall, and just overnight switch?
He will get a rude awakening in the by-election, because neither he nor Gaston can BUY-DIS ELECTION from the people of St Marys South.

      • Was it my beautiful alliteration of the use of words like “VENGEFUL, VENOMOUS and VINDICTIVENESS” that made you angry and your blood boil @ GORD? 😁

        I hope so …

Brixtonian using his “toolbox” of wordplay to discombobulate and mash-up the ABLP acolytes and Gastonites each and every day. Nice!

      • Gerald Watts is on par with Gaston Browne and Lionel Hurst where lying and total dishonesty are concerned and the ALP parliamentarians are just the same , as they were in agreement with the Speaker when he blatantly lied to the House about the motion; and you Gord, have demonstrated that you are a clan member. You appear as one of the Ghost Workers who are asked to make occasional appearances on chosen matters.

  3. I have lost ALL RESPECT for Gerald Watt. At one point he was well respected in Antigua but alas has lost it and become another ABLP LACKEY.
