Christal Clashing, a team member of the Antigua Islands girls who are currently participating in the Pacific Rowing Challenge, opens up about her experience with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and her willingness to share it with the public.

The condition, affecting 5 to 8% of women globally, often presents as severe depression or misdiagnosed bipolar disorder right before the menstrual period.

She decided to share this information after encountering challenges relating her mental health condition.

Read what Christal had to share below:

” Hey, guys. We did have some setbacks. So, I have a condition called Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, which is PMDD for short.

It affects 5 to 8% of women around the world.

Usually, it presents as severe depression or is even misdiagnosed as bipolar right before your period and lasts generally two weeks leading up to your period.

During the Atlantic, I managed it pretty well.

And this time around, I thought I was doing something similar.

But we were pushing ourselves so hard in the first few weeks; we were doing 8 to 16 hours a day of rowing.

And what happened is that with the onset of my period, I had severe hallucinations for about two or three days in the first episode.

And then in the second episode, I had, I think, a medication interaction. We were also taking caffeine during the night to keep us going.

And I think that, combined with the medication I was taking, also led me to a second, shorter episode, where I felt a kind of body high, which is very disconcerting, especially when you’re rowing.

So, yeah, that’s given us a few setbacks.

I’m really grateful for the rest of the team for picking up the slack every time I’ve had these episodes.

We are pushing on, and we just want to bring awareness to the condition because I personally know three other women who suffer from this, but it’s just that it’s not well researched.

And yeah, just bringing more awareness to the condition would be great.”

  1. Thanks for raising awareness…

Men have life real easy. No period pains, no childbirth pains, no menopause, no hot flashes

  2. We thank and respect our sister for sharing. Much respect to her for pushing through her ailment and despite it all she and her comrades have taken on the mighty Pacific ocean and are on their way to another milestone and remarkable accomplishment. Forward Ever backward never as our late great leader Maurice Bishop says.
