Member of Parliament Richard Lewis Threatens Legal Action Over Governance Concerns

Member of Parliament Richard Lewis voiced strong intentions to take legal action regarding governance issues in Antigua and Barbuda, particularly targeting Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s administration.

Lewis highlighted concerns about the lack of transparency and adherence to the law within the government.

“Sometimes when you look at things and the little that you know, if you dig deep, you’ll be shocked as to what is going on behind. We haven’t had an Information Commission for about 2 years. That goes against the letter of the law,” Lewis emphasized.

He expressed frustration over the absence of an Information Commission, which is mandated by law.

Lewis criticized the response from the Minister of Information during a press briefing, where it was suggested to bring questions to him instead of having a functioning commission.

“We don’t want anything from him. We want a commission as a minister of government that’s due. There shall be an Information Commission. You know what that means, right?” Lewis stated, referencing the provisions in the law and the Freedom of Information Act.

Lewis pointed out the importance of integrity in public life and anti-corruption measures, cautioning the Prime Minister and others allegedly violating laws.

He stressed the need for accountability, especially concerning the management of taxpayers’ dollars.

“Anything to do with the management of taxpayers’ dollars, you have to answer. Somebody must give an answer,” Lewis asserted.

He also referenced an Auditor’s report from 2020 that raised concerns about unverifiable information, indicating potential financial irregularities that need addressing.

Lewis reaffirmed his stance on pursuing legal avenues to address these governance issues. “We need to litigate a lot of these things, take them to court. We have the law on our side,” he stated firmly.

Lewis spoke on Snake Pit over the weekend.

  1. I am just glad that someone is prepared to take a tough stance on these issues. We have almost normalize ‘shady deals’ as part of our governance and it must come to an end. It’s the country and citizens that suffers ultimately. I couldn’t care what side of the political divide you are, we must uphold integrity and good governance in public office.

  2. WoW wow wow Sir I am waiting and watching please file a Private Criminal Case against the Minister of Works and Permanent Secretary they would have to answer

  3. A bunch of lying politicians (ABLP)
    Pure thieves
Self enrichment while the population suffer

We have some greedy leaders in this administration only concerned about themselves

  4. The honest hardworking citizens of Antigua & Barbuda are behind you all the way, your Most Honourable Richard Lewis; and I would go even further by adding five things for political transparency in the future:

    1. All elected members of Parliament to conduct themselves with integrity in whilst in governance.

    2. Act with utmost care and due diligence in the performance of their duties.

    3. Minister’s should always base their conduct on the consideration of public interest.

    4. Avoid conflict between personal interest and their duties as members of Parliament.

    5. Parliamentary members must be committed to openness; integrity; and accountability.

All the above should be start to a stricter code of Ministerial and ethical code of conduct, so that if anyone like Gaston Browne comes along again, and they do not they comply, then they will be kicked out of office, from a body like you’ve mentioned, like the Information Commission, or something with more political bite.

ALL THE BEST IN YOUR PURSUANCE OF THE PM AND YOUR LEADERSHIP BID👍🏾

WITHOUT INDEPENDENT SCRUTINY, ANTIGUA WILL ONLY ATTRACT MORE GASTON BROWNE’S IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE … PERISH THE THOUGHT! 🤬

    • Yes! We are with Member of Parliament Richard Lewis, future candidate to be the leader of this nation of Antigua and Barbuda

This is very important moment. MP Lewis needs our help to use this forum to ask that his questions be answered.
The issue on the table is the transaction between WIOC, IF and Ministry of Housing and urban Renewal as well DCA.
Let’s not allow Gaston to do his rope-a-doke and escape.

  5. Asking for the Prime Minister to be cautious, is like asking a man sitting on your young daughters’ bed to be cautious. The time for asking caution has long past. It’s time to take them to court.

They have to be sued in their own person also, not just as officers of the Government.

  6. Really fighting to lead the party am a upp supporter but if Lewis is the leader I would not vote for them
