Mckenzie Fined For His Role In Bar Altercation

Casey McKenzie’s lawyer said his client was drunk when he began pulling on the pockets of another patron at the Cactus Bar in 2017.

McKenzie pleaded guilty to assault with intent at the start of a joint trial with Kenroy “Spani Man” James on Monday.

James who was charged with the more serious offence of wounding with intent did not admit guilt until day two of the trial.

This was after several witnesses testified that he had stabbed Jowayne Haughton in an unprovoked attack.

Haughton, whose uncle owns the bar, was trying to make peace between McKenzie and another man when James suddenly attacked him.

During a sentencing hearing yesterday, McKenzie’s lawyer sought to distance his client from James’ actions.

The defendant was ordered to pay $1500 in fines with $500 due forthwith. He was given until the end of September to pay the balance.

In default he will spend six months in prison. McKenzie was also place on probation for three years, which means he faces a prison sentence if he does not keep out of trouble for the next three years.

James’ sentencing was adjourned to October 15 so that a social inquiry report can be prepared to assist the judge in formulating his penalty.
