Marshall Urges Prime Minister to Prioritize Key Scholarships for National Development

Senator Samantha Marshall today challenged the government’s scholarship distribution strategy, calling for a more targeted approach that aligns with the critical needs of Antigua and Barbuda.

Senator Marshall acknowledged the Honorable Prime Minister’s emphasis on the need for more hotel rooms but swiftly transitioned into a plea for a focus on human resource development, particularly for the small men and women in the country.

Drawing attention to the current scholarship allocation practices, Senator Marshall directed her appeal to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, proposing a shift towards scholarships in strategic fields that address the pressing needs of the nation.

She questioned the efficacy of providing scholarships that do not contribute to meaningful development upon the return of scholars.

“The Prime Minister gives away millions of dollars in scholarships every single year, but Mr. Prime Minister, it is time to have your Cabinet members identify the critical areas,” Senator Marshall asserted. She urged a departure from the conventional practice of distributing scholarships indiscriminately and advocated for a more nuanced approach.

The senator specifically recommended scholarships in engineering, quantity surveying, and wide sector areas of tourism, highlighting the importance of developing expertise to address issues like climate change. She stressed the need for a more deliberate strategy, saying, “Let us look at the critical areas in every ministry.”

Continuing her plea, Senator Marshall underscored the need for more professionals in key areas such as psychiatry, psychology, youth development, and data statistics.

She emphasized the importance of creating a workforce equipped with the necessary skills to contribute effectively to the nation’s growth and development.

“I hope you’re listening, Mr. Prime Minister,” Senator Marshall concluded, urging a reevaluation of scholarship priorities to ensure they align with the critical areas essential for national development.

  1. I am the dude who brought attention to vital importance of social and behavioral sciences (psychology, criminology, sociology, etcetera).

Asked Ms. Marshall to sign a letter in support of my international crime victim advocacy endeavor in her personal and or governmental capacity, she refused.

I wanted to open an office in Bolans and hire locals I’m that office where I get specific types of victims US benefits that includes funds/money, immigration benefits, emotional support from social scientist and various available social benefits. Whether it is a visitor to the US, who were victimized by a qualifying crime while in the US or whether it is a US citizen visiting Antigua or the Caribbean, my firm would provide these victims certain benefits from the US, even when they are no longer in the US.

I also have to investigate the crime and present evidence pertaining to the crime and injuries in the proceedings.

So, fire-arms and the letter for me to present to the US government to show that I am well-positioned as required was urgently needed and the ENTIRE ABLP party refuse to provide me with basic support.

    • Wanting the political lime light of power Samantha seem to have an epiphany, but you are deep in the investors pocket and can only tow your party line as you all sold the country for.

  2. I don’t think scholarships should be withheld from students who performed well. However, I do agree that some should be allocated towards underserved areas. But, students might have opted to study in those underserved areas if they had known in advance that there were opportunities there. So, what is actually needed is proper communication of this information to students before they select their subjects in secondary school and at the college so they can take those career paths into consideration.

  3. There are many persons who received scholarships in key areas and are ready to contribute to nation building but are being stifled by nepotism and good old bad mind. Start by conducting an HR audit of government employees and holding management accountable for wasting human potential.

    • @Fed up, you are a genius and you should truly be fed up of how things are in Antigua but even my family have no clue they deserve more in Antigua.

They only know they deserve the best when contacting me but never when contacting the politicians. That they curse me out for.

  4. Well, well, well! Samantha Marshall shows signs of awakening.
There is veracity in her statements. I am not sure about the indiscriminate part though. Gaston Browne is not capable of being indiscriminate.
However, her point is well taken. Antigua and Barbuda is in need of twentieth century, qualified engineers to oversee water, electricity, and a host of other things. Especially, civil engineers to do the roads and drainage.
However, will room be made for these youths when they return? This has been the age-old problem. Students return home, enthusiastic about contributing, only to be told they’re going to have to wait and languish. Eventually, when opportunities afford, they migrate, taking their expertise elsewhere.
This has to be rectified first.

    • Antigua don’t need engineering novices, too many come back here with no internship but are placed in position only because of academics, look into APUA, the onliest engineer ever transform that place where he use to go out in the field and perform work and actually impart to his subordinates creating more skilled workers, the present electricity manager now is more of a HR and accountant personnel as he more focus on to get even with his subordinates, he can’t ever go out there and go up on the pole and do any thing with electricity, we are just maintaining what we inherited from the British after independence in APUA with costly 1950’s antiquated work that is costly and less aesthetic. And the road engineers need to go university in large countries where the subjected curriculum is more expanse,
We still have lands surveyed with roads cut at right angles for cornering which should have been done octagonal so vehicles can turn corner and eliminate blind sight in corners. And for APUA to able to place poles in a construction format away from 90° line pole placement method that offend the same cornering for vehicle turns in the corner. I would a revamp college that just turn out theoritic rookies each 2 years that can’t find jobs, and invite an elevator escalator college and a Allison transmission school to attached to state college to train our people for this new era where their employment status would change to entrepreneurial instead a state dependency because they would have work Caribbean wide and world wide, the funding agency of the west don’t want us creating this kind of human resources, we must stay dependant. Geology for mining so we could exploit our resources under the earth and sea, not sitting like in Guyana for the white man to come tell us what’s beneath our lands. I think marshall is creating a discussion away from the solution, which will never be of interest to a party that price itself on serving white monopoly capital.

  5. There is a particular perfect example in recent times, how many times in recent weeks have you seen me blogged about what I am experiencing and also the urgent need for the government put people in place with the education and based on merit?

It will not happen, they are just saying things that sounds good. As recently as days ago I asked for support in the form of a basic letter, rejected. Sale of land to me to put up my office, rejected, have my applications expedited that is still pending to this day, rejected.

  6. Samantha, you and Mrs Johnson had constructive contributions. Most of the other labour senators just regurgitating the same things year after year. The UPP did this or didn’t do this. This is why many people can’t be bothered to listen to parliament. Nothing new.
