Maria Bird-Browne has publicly announced her entrance into active politics, after officially announcing that she will be the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) candidate for the St Johns Rural East constituency.
She made a commitment to change the lives of the constituents, while speaking at the wreath laying ceremony of Sir Vere Cornwall Bird – her grandfather and the first prime minister of Antigua & Barbuda.
It was her first public speech since she was recommended by the constituency branch of the ABLP to become the candidate for the next general election.
“For the first time after my nomination, I, Maria Vanessa Bird-Browne, will graciously take this opportunity, to publicly pledge my full commitment to the people of St Johns Rural East. I pledge to you today that I will work relentlessly and whole-heartedly for your advancement,” she said.
Bird-Browne further pledged to leave no one behind and to put the constituency at the “foreground for improvement.”
“I will be bringing the constituency of St Johns Rural East to the front of the line. We will not be sitting back. There is much to be done in Rural East and I will not settle until I have delivered for my good people. This seat will once again be brought home to the Antigua Labour Party and I will continue, as a team, together, we will work even harder to achieve the ultimate goal of creating an economic powerhouse,” she said.
Following her speech, Prime Minister Gaston Browne told scores of people Monday morning that his wife was chosen based on a poll commissioned by the party in the St Johns Rural East constituency.
Bird-Browne, he said, is one of two female candidates who have been confirmed to run on the ABLP ticket. He promised however that his government will ensure that more women will be placed in key positions, as the party strives to create equality within the government.
