A man was sentenced to a year behind bars for killing his cousin in 2011.
Seventeen-year-old, Stacey Ramirez was shot in her left eye and succumbed to injuries hours later.
The shooter was 14-years-old at the time of the incident.
The convict, who is now in his early 20s, told the court “it was an honest mistake”.
“I was young and dumb. I didn’t know what I was doing”, he said as he pleaded for a lenient sentence in the High Court on Friday.
The court heard, the young man was playing with the gun, which was loaded with a single bullet.
He was cautioned to “stop playing” after he pointed the weapon at his cousin and pulled the trigger.
Ignoring the caution, he pulled the trigger a second time yelling “bang” as he did.
Ramirez fell to the ground and the 14-year-old then ran to his cousin, pressing her chest shouting “Wake up nuh gal!”, but she never regained consciousness.
The young man who spent about two months on remand for the incident is due to be released later this year.
