As the law stipulates, Moises Benjamin may receive a maximum sentence of three years imprisonment with or without hard labour for having two wives.
Benjamin pleaded guilty to bigamy on Tuesday and will hear his sentence on March 20, 2020.
Benjamin is said to be separated from his first wife who currently resides in Santo Domingo.
The offence was reportedly discovered by Immigration officials after Benjamin’s second wife was trying to apply for an extension of time in Antigua and Barbuda.
The officials became aware that the man already had another woman listed as his wife, when the applicant identified herself as the wife of Moises Benjamin.

Do know that the law also states that if there is ‘…no communication between the spouses for 7 years, it is to be presumed dead'(either spouse- man/woman).
Not sure who the hell advised him to plead guilty.
From professional law enforcement knowledge, the Prosecution would have had to bring back the ‘…first wife from Santo Domingo’ to give evidence that they were both married and to show both are still alive.
When a man engages an attorney, it is ‘…To Defend him,’ and ‘…Not to advise him to plead guilty.’
Wasting money on ‘…Legal Fees.’

@Kristi, It sounds crazy but trust me… I actually know one guy (call no name, get no blame) Was a well known Antiguan guy back in the day..he left Antigua back when I was just in my teens and came back home to Antigua as a Muslim and married to 2 women but a few years after..I think he decided to stick to one..Don’t know why though..but maybe it was because of the law here..who can say
If the person marries twice where it is legal and then comes here to live, it would be different. Same as gay marriages happening elsewhere. Polygamy is not legal in most places.
But, I guess for this guy, he married the second wife here. That’s why he’s in jail. But they would have to prove that he has a first wife who is alive so as Pompey says, if that didn’t happen, he didn’t have good representation…
I know of someone who married twice as well but one happened overseas with an African tribe. They came back living as one unit. That’s different.
