A man has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment after a jury found him guilty of sexually abusing his 13-year-old cousin during a trip that was supposed to take her to school.

The ruling was delivered yesterday following a unanimous verdict in February. He was convicted of serious indecency and indecent assault, receiving five years for the primary offence and one year for the lesser charge. The sentences will run concurrently.
The incident occurred on October 26, 2022. Prosecutors said the accused then took the girl to a remote dirt road near a stadium, where the assault took place. Evidence presented indicated that the teenager was forced and coerced into sexual acts and subjected to inappropriate touching.

The man made an unsworn statement, acknowledging that he had picked up the girl but claiming he dropped her at school before continuing his day with relatives. Jurors rejected his account, returning guilty verdicts after approximately 90 minutes of deliberations.

a mere 5 years for the trauma, abuse and disease that she endured? wow!
wha happen to den friggin’ judges????!!! 5 Years???!!!!
Stupid mother f’ker
Once again the judiciary has failed us.
😂. You people act like the judicial system in Antigua is run by some foreign entity, and not by the very administration that’s in power right now.. 😂.
And even if it’s run by some others than the ABLP, isn’t it damn time to take our island back and constitute tougher laws in this wicked island that Antigua has become?
Everyone just gets a damn slap on the wrist these days. You kill someone, you get bail, you rape someone, you get a few years, you steal from the government, they brush it under the rug.
Justice is crying out in this island, and not a damn soul is hearing her cry.
Who the hell; s to blame here..heads should be rolling for the damn way Antigua has turned out over the past 15 years. Drugs everywhere, guns everywhere, criminals everywhere, lunatics everywhere..what a damn mess!
This is just sickening, for real.
You know how many rape victims are in Antigua right now? Just imagine.
It’s sickening..All these trauma’s just goes unnoticed or are just glossed over..people are hurting real bad in this corrupt little town.
Enough is enough.
Sheesh!
He got away with just a slap on the wrist for such an offense. Five years didn’t send the kind of message that would serve as a deterrent for others. The court must help to bring some sensibility into our society.
Three regional leaders have complained about this in recent years. Ralph Gonsalves of Sr. Vincent, Mia Motley from Barbados and most recently Gaston Browne. Both Gonsalves and Motley are lawyers and the three of them basically had full control of both houses of parliament.
I’m not a lawyer so I’m not sure what it would take to fix the current broken system but clearly it appears to be beyond the leaders powers.
