Man impersonates Barbudan for relief supplies

A man was being questioned by police for allegedly taking money and food supplies intended for Barbudan residents displaced by Hurricane Irma.

Antigua News Room (ANR) understands that the man was staying at a church facility at Cashew Hill where several Barbudans have been living since the category 5 storm devastated the island in early September. Reports reaching ANR state that church officials have been assisting the Barbudans staying there with food, and at times cash, so they are able to get necessities.

However, the man reportedly blended in and was also receiving the same benefits as Barbudan residents.

Further reports are that his presence there came under scrutiny after many of the residents began to question who he was. None of them recalled ever seeing him on the sister island. Reportedly, other officials from Barbuda were asked to identify the man, but they also did not recognise him.

He was allegedly asked to produce identification, which he did, however, the name contained on it was not the name he had given officials when he registered at the Multi-Purpose Cultural Centre, which all Barbudans were required to do.

Allegations are that the man is claiming to have been among the first set of Barbudans brought over to Antigua following the hurricane. ANR was told that the man is claiming to be a dentist who treats “the well-off” Barbudans on the sister island. Reports are that there was one dentist on the island, who is a Cuban national.

Officials at the Moravian centre who became suspicious of the man notified officials and he was taken into custody and was being questioned.

Officials are reportedly trying to determine where the man is actually from.

Reports are that he was picked up days ago, but ANR could not confirm if he was still in custody being questioned by the police up to the time of this publication.

  1. Some people are so wicked and have no heart they use situations like these to their advantage. He should pay back cash and kind. Stop the advantage.
