ANTIGUA OBSERVER- A man who the police charged almost five years ago with possession of over half a million dollars’ worth of cannabis has been found guilty of drug trafficking.

Darien Anderson Isaac was convicted on Friday following a judge-only trial presided over by Justice Ann-Marie Smith.

He was arrested and charged in June 2020 after law enforcement officers discovered over 40 pounds of cannabis at the Deep Water Harbour.

The police had charged Isaac, who was 37-years-old at the time, with possession of cannabis, possession with intent to transfer, being concerned in the supply of cannabis, importation of the illegal drugs, and drug trafficking.

The contraband, with an estimated street value of EC$536,500, was seized at the cargo port in a counter-narcotics crackdown by officers attached to the Narcotics and K-9 Departments and Customs.

The cannabis was hidden inside a shipment of household appliances coming from Canada.

His sentencing hearing has been set for July 3.
