Source: Real News Antigua: The tough economic position in which Antigua and Barbuda finds itself and the fact that he has not been paid for work performed reportedly pushed a man to try ending his own life. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATS APP GROUP

The attempted suicide allegedly was reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) by the man’s wife.

It is alleged that the man consumed a quantity of bleach and vinegar at his home, at about 8:30 a.m. on March  7.

Reports say the woman told the Police that her husband had been depressed for the past several weeks, as a result of not having been paid for work he had done.

Apparently, that morning, the woman saw her husband go into the kitchen, where he picked up a small bottle of vinegar and consumed a portion of it.

It is further alleged that she also smelled bleach on his breath.
After consuming the vinegar, the man ran to the bathroom and
vomited.

The Emergency Medical Service (EMS) was summoned to the home and the man was transported to the hospital.

Reportedly, the Police were unable to interview the victim, as he  was still in a state of depression, and was being attended to by doctors at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.

Meanwhile, a source says the tough times that people are enduring – due to the state of the economy – are taking a toll on their mental health.

The professional notes that the recent tax increases have placed everyone at a disadvantage –both employers and employees.

He explains that people who contract other persons to work are not able to pay them on time because they, too, are owed – sometimes by the Government.

One woman tells REAL News that, up to Friday, March 8, she was still owed – for the month of January – the 9 percent increase promised to all civil servants.

“It’s not much, less than $200,” she says, “but I want my money. I need that money,” noting that she has her child’s tuition to pay.

In the same vein, a senior citizen confesses to our Newsroom that “things [are] hard” with him.

He says the Social Protection Board is way behind on its stipend, and the food vouchers it periodically hands out cannot replace “the little money,” as they cannot be used to buy the medication he needs.

As a result of his poverty, the octogenarian, too, admits to feeling “down,” especially as he lives alone.

A counselor notes that money troubles and loneliness are triggers for depression, which, when left untreated, can lead to suicidal thoughts.

Unfortunately, she says, public services for mental health are extremely limited in access and in scope; and, so, too many residents are suffering silently.

  1. This is probably the ‘tip of the iceberg’ in Antigua. Too many citizens have outstanding payments and wages ongoing to this day.

Yet, this government insists that we are an “Economic Powerhouse”. How???

LIES ON TOP OF MORE ABLP LIES!!!

I hope this person makes a full recovery, and receives the monies owed to him.

At times, I’m embarrassed to be Antiguan when I read horror stories like this …

    • Yes it’s hard all over but food you still get a bit cheaper than here and also clothes. The Government can do better. They really don’t care about us and how we living. People out here struggling in silence. Look on Social Security…..look at the increase but really what are our benefits for those who are paying when on sick leave, maternity leave etc….We need to call for another Government. We gave Alp a few terms oh lardddd…. Y’all want suffer more man? Stop the freeb the only see you when it close to election time to bribe you. Nothing wrong. Tek the bribe and vote them out. Health care system here is a mess. Doctor bill high right now. Oh glory. What else y’all want? Wake up people. Wake up. Think about your children’s future….

  2. If people really studying in Antigua they would realize that the majority of suicide take place under this Gaston brown administration, and the minions so dam stupid they going to say is UPP tell the man to try comit suicide, things really hard in this country.

  3. E hard all over! World crisis in full effect. It’s not just Antigua. Let’s be realistic and examine how things are all over this world!

    • Question, have you ever heard of someone in another country commit suicide because things are hard in antigus?

    • The person mentioned in the article lives in Antigua so what’s the point of your comment? And in those other countries people commit suicide because of economic hardship all the time. You need to be realistic.

      • Yes prople all over the world unalive themselves all the time because of hardship. So it ain’t Antigua alone. These people on here like they living in LA LA Land and fail to see it ain’t Antigua alone where cost of living is sky high. Even the big and great United States of America is BAWLING over the inflation and cost of living there with all of their resources. They even have water crisis as well but these people on here just like to act like they so brand new…

        • @ Chupes, you obviously do not live in Antigua by that comment.

Antiguans for many years have been working, and then having to wait for their hard earned salaries, sometimes for months and even over a year – I can’t recall the same said thing in any other similar democratic country.

If you are going to make comments about “Antigua ain’t alone” in this instance – without pay – they certainly are.

You try paying your bills when you have worked for it, but your employer delays paying you, or without you knowing when!

          • Here u come again under people comment looking attention like the attention whore u are. People unalive all over the world. But people like to play keyboard gangsters acting like u so brand new. Do us all a favor why don’t go outside and and try to interact with people in real live instead of looking for validity on a news blog with complete strangers.

          • I knew you couldn’t respond in kind to my valid and BRILLIANT reciprocation @ Chupes.

Brixtonian, still the best of the rest 😁

        • Because people commit suicide in other countries due to hardship doesn’t mean Antiguans should just accept it as normal & no big deal. The government of ANU needs to do more for its struggling citizens — instead of enriching themselves
while leaving the poor and elderly suffering.

If the American govt. wanted to fix its financial issues to make life easier for its people, it wouldn’t be spending hundreds of billions of $$ funding proxy wars; or allowing
millions of illegals to cross the borders — paying for their food, logging, medical expenses and giving them free phones.

          • Is he even working for government? Was that information disclose?? There is so much more to this story but these news blogs so love to run with a certain narrative and not give a damn about the parties involved. Do they even think of the impact this would have on the man and his family guess not because the anti government comments even better!!!

  4. 😭by the time people in Antigua stop crying and bawling, there’ll be no more water shortages. Their tears would’ve filled all of the ponds, lakes, dams, ghauts on the island!

    • oh!!!! really? NNOTHING TRAL CYAN TAP WATA SHORTAGE YAH NOT EVEN A CHANGE OF GOVERNMENT.

  5. How can things be so bad when antiguans are told of 8 and 9 % growth, I hope you make a full recovery, but antiguans lub one dog more than themselves and their personal well-being

  6. Hab so nah lub so! It is at this moment that I realize just how dumb a lot of Antiguan are, you have been promote effective immediately as the king of the Dunce class, move to back of the room! Idiat!!!!

  7. Sorry not sorry but this story leave more questions than answers and it is spined in such a way to generate clicks likes and of course those internet ad revenue. Just who exactly owes the husband. Is it government or is it a private contractor. I know exactly where the source of this story came from and I can say a total spin has been put on it!!

  8. The Economy is doing so bad that it is been named the fastest growing economy in the region, second to Guyana only. I winder why I don’t see many youth man on the street begging like in 2009/10 and so one, like when the economy was so bad that we had negative growth year after year. And young men and women where on the street everywhere begging for a dollar. Less we Forget. Those days can easily come back, if we only make the mistake of putting a bunch a conmen, laggards and losers, rapists and murderer at the helm of our beloved country. As Smarty Jr. sang; We can’t let that happen again, NO NEVER AGAIN.
These days if you want any tradesman or even a gardener you have to secure them way in advance. because the are all full. Occupied for weeks in advance.

  9. I think. PM need to look into the people intereste now too much male going crazy. N smoking. And breaking. .children begging. Bc the men mostly can’t see their way.. Mothers.. single mothers working two jobs to make ends meet while leave their children with family members and close friends n finding out they their children are been molested…Bc they trying to put food on the table paying rent that is sky high.. light bill.n water that have been raised. We NEED a way out.food is too high. Not putting the blame on u PM. Bf our Beautiful island hits poverty headline. We KNOW GOD IS THE ULTIMATE SOURCE.But the Government sectors have their role to play too.. U say all government workers SALARIES will be raised which you did.BUT NEED TO PUT A DEMAND ON PRIVATE SECTOR TOO BC SOME OF THEM ARE SLAVE DRIVER.WANT OUR PPL BY PAYING THEM SALARIES THAT. CANT EVEN BUY NOTHING WHEN ALL GOVERNMENT TAX REMOVE FROM OUR SALARIES. PUTTING HOUR TO WORK FROM 8 UNTIL 5..SOME CRAZY HOUR .U NEED TO SEND UNION TO SOME OF THESE WORK SIGHT.

  10. It is fact that the government of the day is owing scores of Antiguans for goods and services and only a chosen few can get paid at the treasury. The Long boom Excevator in the Harbour , the backhoes, the rental of properties built or bought for by ripping off the government and then rented back to the government.
These government ministers are greedy and wicked. They are getting wealthier but the second while contractors in Antigua are owed and not getting paid. Mr. Sponsor of carnival queen, cricket, football, netball and school athletics is doing so with our own money. Contractors after contractors and no tendering process. Over charging and donating a potion , is like washing blood money. I get so upset when I see them shaking hands and putting medals around our young people neck. It’s our own money the rip off with thd aid of our politicians.
Dunce Babo black Serian is another- built house for head of treasury and now building the biggest house in Antigua’s history for the world. All the lands bought up by rehab will return to state.
In the meantime our lone hospital is in a deplorable state . People are literally dying because of no operating theater available. Yet you use millions and have concert. You are paying ALfa Nero enough money that could save many of our people lives.
The local suppliers are not getting paid while social security and MBS are taking legal action against them. Yet the fools still are supporting the government blindly. Do you see who is heading kool construction team, the same local architect/contractor that was head of housing. Now the are building houses for national housing.
We need to stop the raping of Antigua and protect our children and children, children future.

  11. Dog fighting and gambling on the winner is to profitable , bribes are paid those in high authority are involved. Investigate the pit bull breeders and owners if you dare ! Cowards and posturing hypocrites waste time in protest then do nothing
