Malaka Parker says she was unable to attend Monday’s Senate swearing-in ceremony because of what she described as “extenuating circumstances” requiring travel.
In a statement posted on social media, Parker said she would announce the date of her swearing-in once arrangements are made.
“I wish to advise you of my absence from today’s swear in session. This is unavoidable due to extenuating circumstances requiring my travel,” she wrote.

Parker also extended “best wishes” to her fellow senators and the Leader of the Opposition.
Rather than offering congratulations, Parker shared a message calling on public officials to serve the country with commitment and sacrifice.
“May we each answer now to duty’s call, to the service of your COUNTRY, sparing nothing giving ALL,” the statement said.
