Antigua Government Commits to Major Resurfacing Project for VC Bird International Airport

The Antigua and Barbuda government has announced a major resurfacing project for the VC Bird International Airport runway.

The announcement was made by Minister Charles Fernandez and Prime Minister Gaston Browne on Pointe FM today.

According to Minister Fernandez, the runway, which is over ten years old, has necessitated a thorough evaluation by experts to ascertain the exact costs and scope of the required resurfacing work.

“From what I understand, because we had people here now looking at it to redo it, we brought in the experts to look at it to quantify the cost. What needs to be done should be in this range,” Fernandez explained.

The resurfacing initiative follows a troubling revelation about the previous work conducted on the runway, which the Minister described as substandard and not fully compliant with necessary specifications.

“The last time it was done, it was not done 100% the way it should have been done,” he stated.

This led to a financial discrepancy where the contracted amount of $45 million ballooned to nearly $100 million, without delivering the expected quality.

Highlighting the critical importance of the runway to the national economy, Minister Fernandez expressed grave concerns over the past oversight and its potential risks.

“Can you imagine one plane having an accident? What that would do to us,” he remarked, emphasizing the disastrous implications of compromised airport safety on the country’s tourism and general economic stability.

The government has assured that this time, stringent measures will be in place to prevent any recurrence of past mistakes.

“Under the Prime Minister and the cabinet, we are going to make sure that every penny that is spent is well spent,” Fernandez affirmed. The project is set to go out to tender soon.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said this proactive step by the government not only aims to enhance the structural integrity of the airport’s runway but also to restore confidence among international travelers and partners concerning Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to safety and quality in its aviation sector.

The resurfacing is expected to commence later this year, marking a significant stride towards improving the nation’s airport facilities.

  1. The life expectancy of an airport runway that is kept maintained is usually 20 years Max. It is obvious that your government under your stewardship has not maintained the airport since 2014 so don’t speak of the work that was done over 10 years ago . Tell PWD fix the blasted roads.

    • Thank you Ralph, Max (es), both of them do not understand that lies and political propaganda cannot corrupt aviation which is internationally governed.
RUNWAYS HAVE HISTORY, Records & Timeframes.
