Major Hotel Developments Set to Begin Construction

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has provided updates on several high-profile hotel projects poised to commence in Antigua and Barbuda, reaffirming the government’s commitment to boosting the tourism sector with new luxury accommodations.

Browne told listeners to Pointe FM over the weekend that many of these projects were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic but are now progressing steadily.

One of the key developments mentioned is the renewal of the Halcyon Cove Hotel into Royalton Chic, a well-known and scenic property in Antigua. Browne addressed skepticism surrounding the project, stating, “Now, that is one of the most beautiful properties on the island,” and reassuring the public that work is advancing.

Paradise Found

He also shared updates on the Paradise Found Hotel, with construction well underway. He noted that further information on the work completed so far would soon be made available, as the government continues to monitor its progress.

Marriott High-End Resort to Begin Construction Soon

The prime minister confirmed that construction on a new high-end Marriott hotel at Upturns will begin by the end of November, with no further delays expected. The project had initially faced setbacks due to an amendment in the plans, requiring additional approval from the Development Control Authority (DCA). The first phase of construction will proceed, with the second phase including exclusive over-the-water bungalows. However, an updated Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is required for the bungalows, which is currently in progress.

“This hotel will be one of the finest in the Caribbean,” Browne said, emphasizing the significant economic benefits the project will bring to Antigua and Barbuda.

Nikki Beach Resort and One & Only Hotel on Track

Another major project, the Nikki Beach Hotel and Residences, led by billionaire Ambassador Calvin Ayre, will hold its groundbreaking ceremony next week. Browne remarked that this project had also faced delays due to the pandemic but is now moving forward. Ayre has already invested heavily in Antigua, acquiring properties such as a portion of Jolly Beach and Tranquility Bay, and his latest project is expected to add another high-end resort to the island’s portfolio.

One & Only

Additionally, Browne highlighted the One & Only luxury hotel, operated by the Kerzner Group, which will be located at Half Moon Bay. The hotel, part of an internationally recognized brand known for its exclusivity, will be the first of its kind in the Caribbean. The Kerzner Group has already invested millions into land and preliminary work, and construction is expected to begin in early 2025.

Barbuda Luxury Resorts

Barbuda will also see the development of two luxury resorts, including the Rosewood Resort, which is expected to start construction by January or February 2025.

Another project in the works is the Silver Sands resort, spearheaded by an Egyptian billionaire who owns the Silver Sands property in Grenada. However, this project has been delayed due to a dispute over road access near the development site. Browne explained that the local council is pushing for a road to be built parallel to the sea in front of the property, which the government believes is impractical. Efforts are underway to reach a compromise and move the project forward.

These hotel developments mark a significant milestone in Antigua and Barbuda’s efforts to enhance its tourism offerings. Browne assured the public that these projects are on track, with several groundbreaking ceremonies expected in the coming months.

“These resorts will further elevate our islands as premier luxury destinations in the region, contributing to job creation and economic growth,” Browne concluded.

  1. BTW Prime Minister Browne, is there any other private sector developments in the pipeline?

And will the authorities keep an “ecological” eye on these developers so that everything is done in accordance to building control and regulations?

  2. With regards to the Silver Sands Hotel…..and proposed road Parallel to the beach….why is it every hotel wants to build exactly on our beaches…restricting or hindering local access. There is nothing impractical about the road. Look at Barbados there is a coastline road that runs for miles and the hotels are on the other side of the road not on the beach…
I hope the Barbudans continue the fight on this one….
Dickenson bay for example..Antigua finest and most beautiful beach..from buccaneer cove to Halcyon all on the sand…you now use the service entrance between sandals and Halcyon to compete with garbage collection to get to short shirt place and the beach…or by the abandon casino and walk a few hundred yards…
I guess full beach access is one of the guaranteed commitment for them to invest…no beach no investment.

  3. The Barbuda Luxury resorts contemplate stealing Barbudans land. The Barbuda proposed Barbuda roads are not for Barbudans
There are no published documents available to the public which identify these Barbuda Roads.
Among the new Road is one primarily for PLH to get to and back to the airport and their Resorts.
Another Road will divert the current concrete road going to the ferry and will cut through Buton Paddock at River. By doing so this new alignment will provide Purcell bird and the Bulgarians with another 100 acres of land to add to the Dulcina land which will become Rosewood resorts
No new roads in and around Codrington.

  4. @ Dexter Pelle,
    Don’t believe the hype!
Some Barbudans are fighting like hell; but you’d be surprised to know they are being sold down the drain by some of their elected leaders.
Gaston is presenting a picture that the Barbudans are not cooperating, when he knows he has many of them in his pocket.
