Members of the UPP protest outside parliament

Dozens of United Progressive Party (UPP) supporters are protesting changes to the Barbuda Land Act.

They have gathered outside parliament as the Lower House prepares to make several controversial amendments to the land laws of the sister isle.

Chanting “land rights are human rights” the main opposition party is making their opposition to the bill known.

If passed, the amendment will allow Barbudans to hold title to the land they occupy among other changes.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said this will empower Barbudans to seek financing to rebuild their homes destroyed by Hurricane Irma.

The pending amendments are being challenged in the courts after some Barbudans complain that they were not consulted.

  1. Where is the DNA on this? Why are they not present? JoAnne shares the same opinion as the UPP, yet no one from the DNA is out there protesting???? [GASP] They need to put their money where their mouth is!!!

  2. That’s a excellent idea….

    Here’s y….
U have ur land tittle…anything built on it ….YOU THE TITTLE OWNER gets paid….so however long say a hotel …casino …is on YOUR LAND U GETTING PAID….

So its a good investment look at the bigger picture…

Why go back there??? another hurrricne of that magnitude will only demolish den AGAIN ….what you all gonna build a wall around Barbuda to block hurricanes😁….

  3. Didn’t hurricanes also hit Anguilla, St Maarten, Dominica, St Barths, Puerto Rico, BVI and USVI? Why should Barbudans abandon their island? They have the right and will to rebuild like every other island! Will Paradise Found also abandon their plans to build a resort in Barbuda? Hurricanes destroyed everything in their path, including hotels, casinos even air and seaports.

    • Were properties in the other mentioned countries insured??? It is unrealistic to compare rebuilding efforts in any other country that had the benefit of insurance proceeds.

They have the right to rebuild I agree. But they clearly do not have the will!! They want it to just be done for them/fall into their lap with no “give” on their part.

  4. Why don’t Antigua just separate from Barbuda and let them fend for themselves
They are just ungreatful and unthanful.

  5. Where are the other HUNDREDS of Barbudans who are sheltering in Antigua? Shouldn’t they be ALL present at this protest? They ought o be kicking up a storm if their “birthrights” are being STOLEN right before their very eyes. Hmmmmm. Their ABSENCE SAYS A LOT!!!

    • So what you’re saying is that you would expect the Barbudans themselves to protest, and stand up in hot sun? When other people can fight on their behalf and they sit on their bums?
