Main opposition party demands equal access to ABS

(PRESS RELEASE)

The United Progressive Party has written to the Management of the Antigua and Barbuda Broadcasting Service (ABS) to secure fair access to the media coverage in the run up to the 2018 General Elections.

In party correspondence issued this afternoon to ABS General Manager, Mrs. Erna-Mae Brathwaite, it was stated, “As you are aware, the Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda has been dissolved, Writs of Election have been issued, the political campaign has begun and access to the media is mandatory.”

Access to state-owned media by opposition parties was ruled as mandatory by the judicial system of Antigua and Barbuda decades ago, once the Writ of Election is issued by the Governor General. That was done today (Tuesday).

The UPP requested live coverage of the party’s launch this coming Sunday March 4th commencing at 6 pm, as well as equal access to paid airtime at the same rates offered to all political parties.

A copy of the station rate sheet as it now stands was requested from the
management of the National media enterprise so that the necessary
arrangements for payment and scheduling can be duly made. However, on the
grounds of transparency and accountability, the UPP requests proof of
payment by all political parties procuring services at the State-owned ABS
Radio and Television during the 2018 election campaign.

    • Come on! That’s no way to speak to a child! It serves no purpose to climb into her clearly undersized mud pool to chastise her. As King Obstinate sang a few years ago: ‘They’ll grow up in time… is children melee.’

  1. I really enjoy observing the frustration of the ABLP supporters on this site. The ABLP supporters on this site are frustrated because they can’t handle the truth. Bunch of cowards who feel that cussing and bullying will work with everybody. I wonder where they get that from. HINT From Comrade Leader

  2. because he smoke the good stuff nothing wrong with that it is the healing of the nation ……it is better than being a fish ask asot and Michael Browne how that is working out for them u think our kids especially our boys are safe with people like this in our society

  3. That should have been a no brainer!! Our taxes keep that station operating. So for The Opppostion have to ask for access , that is outright injustice, they should have the right ,just like any other organization , political, religious , cultural etc. The ridiculous behaviour of the folks at the top is outrageous, Mr. Harold Lovell Esq. Continue to persue access to the people’s station, do not give up.

    • Um…..er…….you are aware that the UPP exhibited the same behaviour when the ABLP was in opposition right? #PotCallingKettleBlack

Equal acess is needed, but not just when one party is being affected. It is needed all year round

      • The UPP did that because they thought it would help the to win….It was looking very grim for them in 2014 so I understand their reason for trying to bar off the ABLP at the time…Dont be the same way ABLP let the ppl dem continue to pappyshow theirselves in peace let them have access to ABS media….

    • It is not mandatory before the writ of elections. I guess he just gave up that other fight since he is not the opposition leader.

  4. Loool Barbara! You ah kill me. I really pray Harold Lovell gives you a top position as an advicer caused you making more sense that some of the canidates and Tabor

    • An Advicer? Now that’s an interesting play in words. I wonder if it’s deliberate. Wow! Ad + vicer: The one whose portfolio would be to spew vice. She already seems highly qualified.!!
