Magnitude 4.0 Earthquake Recorded Near Antigua and Barbuda

A moderate earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale was recorded early Wednesday morning near Antigua and Barbuda, according to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC).

The tremor occurred at 5:07 a.m. local time (09:07 UTC) and was located at a latitude of 16.81 and a longitude of -59.77, with a depth of approximately 8 kilometres. The epicentre was situated around 233 kilometres east of Saint John’s, Antigua, and 246 kilometres northeast of Roseau, Dominica.

Officials at the UWI SRC noted that this preliminary location was processed by a seismic technician and further analysis is ongoing. While no immediate reports of damage or injuries have emerged from Antigua and Barbuda, residents are advised to remain vigilant for any aftershocks.

The region lies within the seismically active Eastern Caribbean, where tectonic activity is closely monitored due to its potential to trigger tsunamis or structural impacts.

Local authorities continue to assess any potential effects on infrastructure and will issue updates if necessary.
