
Magnitude 3.5 Earthquake Detected Near Antigua and Barbuda
Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda – A 3.5 magnitude earthquake was detected early Friday morning, August 16, 2024, according to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI, SRC). The tremor was recorded at 4:43 a.m. local time (08:43 UTC), with an epicenter approximately 52 kilometers northwest of Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.

The quake’s coordinates were pinpointed at latitude 17.54N and longitude 62.04W, with a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface.
The seismic activity was also noted near other regional cities, including Basseterre in Saint Kitts and Nevis, situated 81 kilometers northeast, and Brades in Montserrat, 85 kilometers north-northeast of the epicenter.
As this is a preliminary report generated by automatic computer algorithms, UWI, SRC has indicated that the location and details of the earthquake are subject to revision pending further analysis by their experts.
Local authorities and residents in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant for any aftershocks or additional seismic activity. However, there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries associated with this event.
