Residents in Antigua & Barbuda are stocking up on hand sanitizers, face masks and disinfectant products to protect against the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.
Orngel Erskine, the Human Resources Manager at Cost Pro Supermarket revealed that many of the shelves where these products are kept have gone bare.
“There was one particular customer that came in with a box and she was like, I need every hand sanitizer that you have, so she basically spent maybe over about $200-$300’s worth of cash in hand sanitizers. She cleared the whole shelf”, Erskine said.
“At this moment, we are out of the mask, we’re almost out of Lysols, we are out of most of the Lysol wipes and hand sanitizers so we can see that persons are really taking precautions and measures”, she revealed.
Erskine said the supermarket is also putting things in place to protect its employees.
“We had to actually go out and get hand sanitizers because what we had are finished and, you know, we care about our safety of our staff so yes we decided to take measures as well”, the HR Manager explained.
The supermarket is reportedly expecting new arrivals next week.
Rhyves Knowles, the Night Supervisor at Wood Pharmacy said they are also out of hand sanitizers and face masks.
“We are presently out of masks, that’s the N-95, we have exhausted practically just about 1000 in just about a couple of days so we don’t have any and we don’t know when we’re gonna get because all our suppliers overseas they are out”, he revealed.
He said some suppliers were seeking to capitalize on the high demand by raising their prices.
“Earlier on in the week, we got a quotation for Lysol, which has actually doubled, Knowles revealed adding, “we are not increasing our prices with the stock that we have here, you know, if it is that we exhaust that and we have to get those in those higher prices then we will have to, we wouldn’t have a choice but to take out prices up”.

COVID-19: should we panic?
No. We should not panic about COVID-19. When we panic, we become flustered and are more prone to making mistakes.
But we should be concerned about COVID-19, and therefore remain vigilant and informed…. https://www.facebook.com/theinfectiousdoctor/videos/2431063770526313/
Ain’t no corona virus or disease robbing me of my peace of mind. Yes I will take the necessary precaution, but I refuse to have any “ruffled feathers” at this point in life. This world is NOT my home. I’m just passing through.
