Lucky Eddi’s Ceases Operations Over Licence Issues and New Restrictions

6

It is with regret that Lucky Eddi’s announces that it will close it’s doors immediately, and will cease all operations, including the restaurant, bar, music venue and tennis courts for the foreseeable future.

All businesses operating within the National Park are required to have a current business licence, issued by The National Park Authority. As this has not been forthcoming, on legal advice, we have been advised it would be imprudent to carry on operations, or renew any employment contracts, while the threat of immediate enforced closure remains a possibility. There is also the very serious question of whether our public liability insurance is valid, or could be potentially questioned, in the absence of a current business licence.

In addition, the recently introduced regulations regarding “parties” in English Harbour, and the extreme parking restrictions now in place create an uncertain business environment, apparently designed to deter Antiguans from visiting an area historically known for entertainment, especially during the sailing season.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank the people and organisations that have supported us during the past few years. The Police Drama Group, The Defence Force Band, Island Academy students and staff, Antigua & Barbuda Youth Symphony Orchestra, PAWS, Antigua & Barbuda Marine Association, Anjo Distribution, Naydene Gonnella, Nicholson Gin, Asher Otto, 3 Cylinder, Tian Winter, Janine, The Strays, Oyster Yachts, Elite Dance School, Michele Delco, Premier Beverages, Royal Ocean Racing Club, Uprising Boxing Gym, Liberta School Summer Camp, Khan Cordice & the Ministry for Creative Industries, DJ Purist, DJ Tanny, TJ Quix, the Karaoke singers, and the thousands of patrons that have come through our doors in the past three years. We would particularly like to thank our ten permanent staff, and twelve part-time staff. Together we created some memorable nights.

To reiterate, we applied for a NPA Business Licence in 2022. We were informed that it was approved, and to come to Nelsons Dockyard to collect the written licence. On arrival, we were informed that the letter was not ready, and every subsequent request for the past three years has been met with one excuse or another. No licence.

New regulations, constantly shifting goal posts, illegal threats of injunctions, bullying of customers, attempted imposition of EC$5,000 for an event licence, and….ridiculous parking restrictions! Welcome to English Harbour!

  1. Good riddance. Now let an indigenous Antiguan or Barbudan take the lease. It is time that we take back English Harbour which has become South Africa.

  2. You get the government you deserve………
I bet some of the affected staff and beneficiaries of your business were jumping and shouting, “labour, labour. ” yesterday.

  3. Maybe the public will hear from the Senator who is the chairman of the board of directors for the National Parks.

We certainly heard him, when he sounded as if he was defending the owners of Sailing Week when
His own government announced it will be having a new regatta come March 2027.

Speak up chairman of the National Parks Board of Directors. The public want to hear you on this one.
