The United Progressive Party (UPP) staged a picket outside Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s office this morning, protesting proposed vehicle license fee hikes.

Despite a lower-than-expected turnout, Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle, former UPP leader Harold Lovell, and St. Mary’s South representative participated.

Pringle criticized the lack of consultation, arguing that residents cannot afford additional taxes, while Lovell stated he was there in solidarity.

Over the weekend, Prime Minister Browne clarified that the Cabinet is considering a flat $100 annual increase and will assess the cc-rating of affected vehicles.

Efforts will be made to ease the impact on bus and taxi operators, with SUVs and heavy-duty vehicles facing a proposed 40% fee hike. The matter will be discussed in Cabinet next Wednesday before reaching Parliament’s Lower House.

  1. Only because some of us have to work. But make no mistake that we are in solidarity with the ones who attended. I know my “x” will speak in the next general elections if the PM does not find a way to make this tax more equitable.

  2. Low turnout because people have to work.
No one is for the increase. Though we need roads fixed, 40 percent, is too big of a jump from no percent and we also need to keep track of how the moneys are spent. But that nah ever happen. What will happen is personal growth in the ministers pockets.

  3. The usual suspects (delusional UPP sycophants) showed up. The usual small turnout. What a surprise!

Antigua people are not foolie. Everyone is aware that the Prime Minister has committed to make adjustments after directly engaging with the people. Picketing a measure that is not finalized is yet another new height to UPP stupidity and was soundly rejected by an intelligent public.

If the new arrangement announced after Cabinet meets is unsatisfactory that would be another matter. It was utterly foolish for Hitler Isaac and Puppet Pringle to pretend there was no response to the people’s concerns in their desperate attempt to get some “noticement”.

Baldwin Spencer must be sick to his stomach watching the UPP flushing down the political toilet.

  4. Oh be quiet “There in spirit”!!! You must be one of the jumbies, seen and unseen that comprise the UPP membership. Face the facts. You guys are becoming fossilized with your dated responses, outdated practices and just boring, daily diets of blah, blah, blah. Time to replace your termite-ridden wood before your entire structure collapses!

  5. I want to congratulate the organizers of the picket.

It would have been good to see the whole of Antigua out there but for different reasons, persons may not have been able to attend.

Once thing is for sure, I will continue to try and influence as much of my family and friends as possible to vote against this labour party government next election.

I don’t have to picket to do this and I am TOTALLY committed to continue my efforts in trying to influence those around me.

  6. This is not a political issue it’s a citizen issue, it is a sad thing some people love selective party advantage, in the Uk, it doesn’t matter what party they support they all stand together because each and everyone is affected, it is sad here we love party and politicians more than ourselves and our interests. “Many more will have to suffer many more will have to die”,Don’t ask me why “Bob Marley

  7. Pickets and protests are useful tools to get administrations to consider in any form of suggested increase.
In this case however, it is a bit premature as there is no set amount finalized. There will be a debate in parliament on Thursday where this is listed on the order paper. I trust that the opposition MPs will be prepared to have a robust debate with constructive and meaningful alternatives rather than bashing and denigrating the government’s proposals.
    Team work is dream work.

  8. Shut up Dave Ray. You live in a tent house in a merica and me sure you have no car. UPP need to keep at it. The first time will always be challenging but others will join once awareness spreads

  9. Not surprised at the LOW TURNOUT!!! Typical Antigua ppl like to just RUN DEM MOUTH but punk out when it’s time for ACTION.

  10. @PAPA

“The other MPs” are anti-Pringle so they won’t put aside their little feelings for national interest. So when you hear PREACHERMAN SHOOGY tell Miss Knight that he will leave UPP if he don’t like what the party doing, you can see that he is LYING HYPOCRITE!!!!

Guess he has to follow the tugging of his puppet master….the same INCOMPETENT tourism 🤡 that wrecked tourism during UPP years

  11. … And in the meantime lickspittling Kowtowing sycophants like @ Faithfull national # 1 and @ Leadership Matters continue with their empty-headed and foolish BAVARDAGE and allow Gaston ‘Gaslighting’ Browne to do as he pleases without any damn questions.

THESE TWO ABLP ACOLYTES HATE TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY. FACT!

One wonders if Antigua & Barbuda will ever have an ABLP party that will put its citizens first, when there are so many onerous cretins like the above two that just lie down and roll-over so Gaston can tickle dem belly like a grateful dog, without critiquing anything he does.

Politics done yah so … DONE!!!

  12. You think people stupid??? UPP marched against the Education Levy and plenty of their families went on to benefit from Board of Education scholarships.

UPP March against MSJMC and plenty of them get treatment there. Paul Quinn and Franz DeFreitas G-R-E-A-T-F-U-L used Observer Radio to ridicule the health of 2 opposing MPs. Now where are they for today?

Alex Browne voted NO to acquisition of the Cancer Center…………….

History shows that Labour Party had the MASSIVE TURNOUT against the Wicked Sunshine government IMF policy!!!

So who do the ppl really trust? Definitely not the UPP!

  13. @John Brown

You are Exhibit A for the useless 🤡 specimen. Excuses, excuses, excuses……never heard about making a sacrifice?? Our parents and grandparents did that. You are the LAZY, UNDEPENDABLE kind eh???

  14. Nunbaddy dat senible want fu mix n mingle wid de SNIPER!! Blue shirt is a dead giveaway….a try fu politicize de subben

A too glad de real Antigua neargah nah fall fu de bait and pappyshow dem self wid are u

  15. Come on now @ No Use crying, even if the UPP didn’t exist and Antigua had another viable political party, you would still worship the ground that Gaston walks on and keep him in power forever and a day.

Supporters like you just cannot envisage our great country without Gaston Browne at the helm.

Here’s a good test for you (or any other ABLP supporters): which other ABLP Minister can you see leading this government other than Browne?

    Nobody??? I thought so … heheheeee 😂

  16. @BRIXTONIAN

You are a CLOWN. You continue to support The PUPPET MASTER and the PUPPET. Loser BRIXTONIA…You cannot pullout 20 people to protest. What a shame.

Tell Shugy to return the money to the church and the money for the boat to St. Mary South DAMN SCAMP.

  17. @ RESIDENCE, talking about returning money; when is Gaston ‘Gaslighting’ Browne going to return the $1 Million Dollar Hurricane Irma fund money to the Barbudan’s?

Didn’t you watch that amazing interview that the investigative journalist Nikki Phoenix had with the donor Steve Morgan requesting answers from the Prime Minister; and up until now, Mr Morgan is still awaiting a response.

And you ah cry ’bout “alleged” church money!!!

Why don’t you roll over as well and mek Gaston tickle your belly like a dawg …

  18. There in the spirit- nothing tal go so. Antigua people are afraid to demonstrate. Most are afraid that they will be seen and get victimized. If you were to hold a text in vote thousands of people would text or WhatsApp in. Who are we afraid of , the question you may ask. Antiguas are afraid of the leaders of the ruling ABLP see them in the crowd. I am also sure if it was UPP in power these would be a different few. That is why 2009 elections was so shocking to the UPP party and last election shocked ABLP like a lighten bolt. Antiguans wait until general elections to show their displeasure Anthony Smith. Antiguans were upset how people were treated with the vaccine. People were tear gassed, they waited until general elections. They did not like the African saga, they waited until elections. So where are the bus drivers, the taxi drivers, the truck and heavy duty owners, the teachers and nurses ? All going about their business until elections.
The sad thing is that the UPP is so fragmented that they might not even make an impact not even with all these issues, in the next general elections.
So the ABLP might not pay any consequences immediate or in the next general elections. In fact despite an issue as vexing as this to the motoring public , several of the UPP parliamentarians are going to loose their seats unless that organization pulls itself together.

    • No! They are NOT afraid. They just do NOT HAVE TIME TO WASTE WITH AN INCOMPETENT, USELESS, HYPOCRITICAL, WASHED UP, UPP!

Young people busy buying nice cars and want smooth roads to drive on. No time for EMPTYHEAD PRINGLE, DONDO HEAD SERPENT & SINFUL SHOOGY WHO USED CAMPAIGN FUNDS TO ENRICH HIMSELF!!!!
