The Minister of Health provided an update on the situation as pertains to the status of the Covid-19 impact on Antigua and Barbuda, the readiness and the planned reaction as the data are examined.
The COVID-19 tests that have been undertaken by CARPHA in Trinidad will be replaced by local testing since the reagents are now landed, the laboratory has been certified, and the technicians have been and are being trained.
The number of persons who have been found positive, and the numbers that are either in isolation or in quarantine in Antigua were reported.
The Minister noted that CARPHA treats tests that prove negative, especially when the negative number exceeds tests that prove positive, as a signal of inefficient use of its resources.
In the last batch sent to CARPHA from Antigua, more than 50% of the samples proved negative, the Minister pointed out.
Although 1,500 testing kits have been provided by the People’s Republic of China, and 50 of a donation of 1,000 have also arrived, others will arrive next Wednesday.
Still, there will be judicious use of the resources since no-one knows how long this crisis will persist. Aprons, gloves for both surgical and isolation use are in good supply; masks PPEs and shoe covers are also in sufficient supply.
There are 70 rooms at MSJMC for COVID patients should the need arise; 17 isolation rooms at Margetson Ward at the old Holberton, 72 rooms at the old air Force Base, and 75 beds for quarantine at the NTTC.
The extent of the readiness can only be surpassed if there is community spread of Covid-19; every effort is geared towards encouraging all residents of Antigua to practice good social distancing.

To the “proactive” planners, HURRICANE SEASON is upon you; and, more than likely, strong Tropical storms, and probably(the best case scenario) hurricanes will not develop, to the point, of creating havoc, to add more stress to an already stressed Nation; but, planning for the next year, must include hurricane preparedness. Earthquakes, don’t seem to present such, “immediate” danger, yet be mindful, a good strong to moderate one can also raise, the stress level.
Anyway folks, not trying to be a #ALARMIST, but hey, forward critical thinking is needed, URGENTLY.
As, for those “test kits,” I don’t know…..I hope your numbers don’t begin to shoot up, in about a week or two? Because, even with 50% or more of the cases presently tested are negative; I, think with the last set of data, on tests, approx. 38% were positive(don’t quote me on that – it came from numbers provided in a three or four day old report).
Anyway, hoping that the methods being put in place will work.

Rad Smood, you are a real jackass. You really think it is a good idea to remind stressed people that they can also be hit by hurricanes and earthquakes right now? What help can that be other than to raise their stress levels even more? Yes, those can happen but why remind people about them now when they are at their wits end? Jackass.
Critical Thinking is required, and whether you like it, or not, the reality is the reality, and those in charge of CRISIS MANAGEMENT have to be proactive. Waiting until, the STORM is up you us ASININE.
In a crisis like this, you have to factor in ALL SCENARIOS whether you like to, want to, or not.
The fluid, and unpredictable nature of this crisis, and from the present scientific data, says this COVID-19 crisis last into late Summer, early Fall. Why the fuck, would CRISIS MANAGEMENT, ignore, hurricanes and or tropical storms, and put plans in place?
Trust me, I’ll be a “jackass” but I’d be preparing for Hurricane season, as well…

Ras mood you were well on point. Note the news item regarding the minister of agriculture that such has to be part of the current conversation. Some people are in denial as it relates to the realities of life. Sometimes you just have to leave them to their ignorance.
#Just Saying…I know that, “Ignorance,” serves one well, in terms of seeking the essence of life, through the Unknowing powers, of the Universe as in, “Ignorance Is Bliss.”
However, there’s a thin line between, confidence and arrogance, and therein lies ignorance…
Be safe, and please prepare for the Hurricane Season. With the Nation been on lockdown, and could very well be, depending on the said testing, the lockdown could last for weeks, which puts you right at the beginning, of the official hurricane season!
It’s better to be, over prepared in times like these.

Molwyn Joseph: How soon would would the testing kits be ready to be used in Antigua and Barbuda.They are there but the people have to be trained to use those equipment.Before they are ready to be used.The machines are there.The testing is not ready as of today,Monday.
