UPP Chair D. Gisele Isaac Explains Walkout from Party Retreat
The embattled Chairperson of the United Progressive Party (UPP), D. Gisele Isaac, has publicly addressed her decision to walk out of a party leadership retreat several months ago, describing the experience as deeply troubling and emotionally jarring.
Speaking during an interview on Crusader Radio, Isaac rejected criticism that her departure from the retreat reflected instability or disloyalty, instead painting a picture of a toxic environment in which she felt demeaned and disrespected.
“You all just crazy,” Isaac said in response to the scrutiny. “I left a meeting before when I was at the Board of Education—and I left because of the tone of the meeting. I said to the chair, ‘This is not good,’ and when she didn’t listen, I got up and walked out.”
She went on to recount how, following that particular board meeting, an apology was later issued to her after investigations proved the allegations made against her were unfounded.
Isaac drew parallels to her recent experience within the UPP, pointing to the behaviour of some individuals at the retreat, which she said crossed a line of respect and civility.
“One person spoke to me in a manner that, had he been a white man speaking to a Black man, people would have called it racist. If it was a white woman talking to me like that, it would have been the same,” she said.
She emphasized her longstanding service to the party as a volunteer, not as an employee, and said she had always maintained a respectful tone in her interactions.
“I have a bachelor’s degree with honours in journalism and English. I don’t need to speak to people like that. I’ve never disrespected anyone by the way I speak.”
Isaac revealed that during the retreat, she was stunned by the tone and content of remarks made by party members—many of whom she had worked with closely over the years. She said the criticism made her question whether she could continue in her leadership role.
“I was bewildered. I didn’t know I was such a flawed creature until that retreat,” she said. “These were people I had opened my home to, shared my resources with, cooked food for. And then to hear what they were saying—it was unbelievable.”
Eventually, she passed a note to UPP Political Leader Jamale Pringle and General Secretary Shawn Nicholas indicating her intention to leave both the meeting and potentially the position. She then informed the meeting’s moderator, Pastor Paul, that she could no longer continue.
“I said to Pastor Paul, ‘I can’t continue. This is not a position I can continue to hold.’ And I left.”
Isaac’s statement is the most detailed public account to date of the internal tensions that have rocked the UPP in recent months. Her comments are likely to reignite debate about leadership stability and internal party dynamics as the opposition prepares for future electoral challenges.

It is not the first time that we have heard the allegations of the chairwoman walking out of the retreat. Why did it take so long to explain her actions?
You said you could not remain in the voluntary position. Why are you still in it when the walls are crumbling around you?
It is said that a million French men could not be wrong. Can you look in the mirror as chairwoman and say that you are doing a good job at uniting the party and preparing it for governance?
I have heard you call for the duly elected prime minister of Antigua to step aside because you believe he is doing a piss poor job. He truly is. Why don’t you do the same if the UPP body believes so about you?
What about the other issues highlighted by the three members of the party? You have not addressed them.
What about the delegation to meet with Caricom visiting team, who selected them and why was the three MP’s not invited?
You claim that the retreat was rowdy. Did you offer an apology for your tardiness?
The role of the chairwoman is to unify the party in light of all that has happened. Are you satisfied that you are uniting the party?
You have selected a slate. Do you believe the caretakers are the best to bring about victory for the party?

Isn’t it true that you are the one controlling the leader and that he can’t speak without your approval?

Giselle boasts of her academic qualifications. She has more degrees than a thermometer. She is as fluent as Obama. Yet she supports a leader whose bio will state that he graduated from the All Saints Secondary School. She is proud of her academic achievement. Why didn’t she encourage the leader to take up Gaston’s offfer of a scholarship ship to attend UWI, Five Islands. Is that why she supports Pringke as leader so she can use her superior academic qualifications to pull his strings???????

Please do not let the irrelevant, SORE LOSER, power hungry Richard Lewis distract you from what is really important.
The Convention Results still burning his stomach like acid. He was over-confident, arrogant, pompous with an over-inflated ego going into the Convention. He was so sure that he would win, but he got a rude awakening that shattered his sense of worth. A psychotherapist can help him deal with that, but it is not your job to babysit his feelings.
Like a snake sheds its skin, so must the UPP. Fret not. When the dust settles, the real soldiers will still be standing with you and the UPP.
Keep your head up Chairman Isaac.
If the chairperson had any gusto, she would have stayed the course of the retreat and listened to the exchanges of the members, flawed or otherwise, then rebutted accordingly.
For her to suggest that she’s not an employee of the party is uncalled for. She made a commitment to serve as the Party’s chair as her responsibility to the organization. Never get into the fire if you can’t take the heat.
I learned some years ago of her walking out of a education board meeting, which changed the minds of some of members compromising her humility.
Had she stayed to thrash out the issues then, they would not have been at an impasse at this time.
Chairpersons have a responsibility to lead by their ability to foster an atmosphere of healing and to create common ground using all the tools in the kit to harness comradery.
The UPP will continue to implode with that apathetic culture and cynical disposition.
Antigua and Barbuda needs a healthy opposition, one that is ready to serve if that opportunity arises.

Ms Isaac I give you my fullest respect. And I do agree that you ought to have respect from your UPP party counterparts. But, with all due respect Mam, Haven’t you considered that everyone in the party may not be at your level. Not everyone is educatedas you are, and therefore you will have some, that will run their mouth in a fashion that will not be up to your standard. Because you are most highly educated woman. You have to be smarter than them. Give them the benefit of the doubt and catch them Infront of The Party leader and deal with them behind closed doors. The UPP needs you. You didn’t have to put out our dirty laundry in the public. You have been through hell and high water with the red cool aid party. Are you going to allow them to win❓ Madame, you must look at the bigger picture, look at what is at stake. Right now the stakes are high, and your actions make the UPP party look weak. I have the highest respect for you Mam. Even when you got the position of Speaker of the house of Parliament. I was so proud to be a woman, and you have set a standard for young women in Antigua and Barbuda. Don’t allow, one empty headed person to nip at your confidence and break you in pieces. You are stronger than that my sister. I hope this letter reaches your eyesight. Because, your position in the UPP party is commendable. I implore you Mam. Make no apologies, return, and take your stand, and deal with the bad egg. Good, bad, and indifferent make up the party. Everyone is not the same. Be the best at what you do. And God will bless you, Antigua and Barbuda needs You. It doesn’t matter if you are behind the seens. You are a great leader. Return to your position, and fight for us. Please and thank you so much.

The UPP is used by you as a spring board, to be heard and seen on the international political stage, parading as someone fighting for the people, but it’s all is just a show, settling your personal vendetta with Gaston Browne, which you can’ never deny.
There are some folks who keep repeating how educated that person is however that STATEMENT does not do justice to that degree and proved that her position at the top is TROBLESOME at best. The way some of her supporters speaks about her education, one would think she is the most educated person in the Party or our bit of Paradise. That statement can be viewed as to solidify those who have made their departure. Not only is making sure the current PL/LO remain in his position is good for her ego/control but it can be also seen as a means of additional salary/income and as for the Leader of Opposition she is probably whispering in his ears that if he remain at the helm not only will he keep his current salary and previlleges but also at the end of his tenure his pension will be much greater. As for the PM he is a rogue Political strategist having fun as long as the curent leaders stay put. He knows just like 98% of the elctorates that yhe current leader of Oppositon doesn’t know his ASS from his ELBOW but keep calling out the two or even three that he knows will keep alleged malfeasious behaviour of his actions in the public spotlight and he cannot afford to let happen. Not that he is afraid of the members for SMS and SJRW, but they will keep things on the forefront.
Seems Isaac thinks simply because you cuss someone using the queen English, you have not ridiculed them. Whether you insult someone using coarse language or not, you have insulted them. Why it so hard for her to say sorry? This may explain why she is no longer married. Unless you are Donald Trump (on his third questionable marriage) like, saying sorry can actually make you look good.
Perhaps the only person Gisele for sure is more educated than in the UPP is Pringle. I asked today that Gisele with all her chat have a debate with Damani Tabor so we can see who is lying or telling the truth. You have balls chairman Gisele please take on Tabor.

What an amusing collection of responses.. Gisele did herself no favour at all by opting to come out from behind the dark curtain to set the record straight. I am possibly her least favorite fan, but will be the first to tell her that she did a splendid job of making herself an even bigger laughing stock. Sometimes is best to just shut the hell up. You have no defense for your appalling conduct prior to and post the latest UPP Convention. You sounded like a wounded animal who, having been rescued by the dog catcher, is trying to regain full use of your mental faculties. What a pathetic monologue. The fact that in order to explain and justify your low-class conduct at the 2024 UPP Convention, you had to resort to a single incident occurring donkeys years ago while you were an employee of the Board of Education is nothing short of an act of desperation, pure slapstick comedy. The dog-catcher’s job was clearly not complete. By referencing your “qualificationns” – a mere bachelor’s degree in (of all things) journalism and proceeding to show that possession of this low pedigree degree would make it impossible for you to verbally disrespect anyone!!!!! She clearly has not fully recuperated from her fall from the lofty pinnacle of Speaker of the House to an almost unemployed nobody. Judging from the linguistic competence of your fawning supporters I am not surprised that, to them, you are soooo intelligent with Bachelors degree in journalism . I’m sure that you are among the least “educated” or intelligent members of the UPP members. The only UPP members with inferior qualifications are Franz de Freutas, Alister Thomas, Pearl Quinn, Algernon ‘Serpent’ Watts and Jamal Pringle.
Admire her if you wish, fot whatever nonsensical reason, but certainlly NOT for the possession of a 40year- old degree in journalism. Remove that, and what is left is an old, irrelevant, unfulfilled, crass bully living in the memory of a past of unmerited titles and feigned respect. Gisele has absolutely nothing to offer this blessed country of ours.
@Faithful National #1 from my understanding Gisele Isaac also has a Masters degree but who the hell cares. A degree does not mean a damn thing in the absence of common sense and personal integrity. Isaac as Chairman of the UPP is a waste. People who have worked with her all conclude that she is not a people person. The UPP right now is better off without her. It is a pity that bright people like Dr. Mansion, Dr. Cleon Athill, Dr. Philmore Benjamin and the brilliant Damani Tabor have left the Party. The UPP needs a rebirth and revival.
