Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst has responded to criticism from the opposition regarding the 2024 budget process, asserting that all ministers will have opportunities to present their portfolio plans during future parliamentary sessions.
During the post-cabinet press conference, Hurst dismissed claims that the process lacked transparency and accused the opposition of engaging in disruptive tactics.
“The budget debate is an opportunity for both sides to tell their story,” Hurst explained, noting that ministers would still address their specific areas of responsibility when bills and other parliamentary matters are discussed in the coming months.
He said that parliamentary proceedings are controlled by the speaker, not the opposition, and emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum during debates.
Hurst took aim at the opposition’s actions during the debate, describing them as “unbecoming” and counterproductive to the nation’s governance.
He referenced instances where opposition members allegedly refused to participate when called upon and used the opportunity to criticize the government.
“These games are a clear indication that, even in the face of certain loss, they are prepared to set aside the business of government,” he said.
The chief of staff also underscored the importance of the budget debate as a key moment in the legislative calendar.
While acknowledging that the opposition is entitled to scrutinize and critique government policies, he argued that their behavior during the process was unnecessarily obstructive and ultimately unhelpful to their constituents.
Hurst reassured the public that the government remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing its 2024 agenda. He pointed to the administration’s overwhelming parliamentary majority as a significant factor in ensuring the passage of critical legislation, including the budget, despite opposition dissent.
He further noted that the budget debate provides the opposition with an opportunity to present alternative policies and solutions to the public. However, Hurst argued that instead of focusing on constructive criticism, opposition members often resorted to personal attacks and disruptive behavior.
With the budget now passed, the government has shifted its focus to implementing its 2024 priorities, which include continued economic growth, infrastructure development, and social programs aimed at improving the lives of citizens.
Hurst expressed confidence in the administration’s ability to deliver on its promises, stating that the opposition’s actions would not derail the government’s plans for national development.
