Light 2.9 Magnitude Earthquake Recorded Near Antigua, No Reports of Shaking

A light earthquake with a magnitude of 2.9 was recorded in the Caribbean Sea, approximately 61 kilometers east of St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 7:33 a.m. local time.

The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 11.6 kilometers, but no reports of it being felt by residents have been made.

The closest larger population centers to the earthquake’s epicenter include Freetown, All Saints, and St. John’s, all in Antigua and Barbuda.

However, none of these areas reported feeling the tremor. Neighboring islands, including parts of Guadeloupe and Montserrat, also reported no impact.

Seismic data from Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RENASS) indicated weak shaking in the region, with an estimated release of seismic energy equivalent to 0.338 tons of TNT.

Despite the earthquake’s shallow depth, it likely went unnoticed due to its low magnitude.

Earthquakes of this size in the Caribbean region are not uncommon, though they rarely cause damage or disruptions.

The nearest volcano to the quake’s epicenter is Soufriere Hills, located 110 kilometers away on Montserrat.

No injuries or damages have been reported, and residents are encouraged to report if they felt any tremors.
