Today, we come together to celebrate our youth, the dynamic force behind our digital age. This year’s theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development”, highlights the critical role that digital technology plays in achieving sustainable development.

Our young people, as the digital generation, are not only the most active users of technology but also the visionaries shaping our future. They are at the forefront of innovation, and have a unique understanding of how to leverage digital tools for problem solving and entrepreneurship.

It is therefore important to increase the participation of our youth in shaping the future of Antigua and Barbuda at every level. We need more programmes to engage the youth at the community level, more effective outreach to capture our youth’s concerns and solutions through social media, more youth involvement in service organizations, and more youth participation in public affairs.

We must all strive to build bridges of cooperation with our youth, through respect, inclusion and engagement in every area of life.

Our youth are not just the leaders of tomorrowโ€”they are the innovators and changemakers of today. So let’s give them every opportunity to drive positive change.

As we celebrate International Youth Day, let us re-commit to empowering our youth, protecting their rights, and fostering their civic engagement.

Together, we can build a future where “every click can lead to progress” and every young person has the opportunity to thrive.

Statement by Hon. Kelvin Simon on International Youth Day 2024

The future of a nation is defined by its

youngest population and in Antigua and Barbuda, our youth are some of our greatest resources. As we celebrate Youth Day 2024 under the theme โ€˜From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,โ€™ this is a significant opportunity to highlight the pivotal role that digital technology plays in shaping our future.

Recognizing the importance of our youth in the growth of our communities and our nation, we must therefore make this more than a theme, but a call to action. We must find effective ways to harness the energy, creativity, and innovation of our young people as they leverage digital technology.

With access to digital tools and platforms, our youth are not just passive consumers of technology but active creators, innovators, and digital entrepreneurs. They continue to amaze us with their ideas and creativity. Whether it is developing apps to address unmet needs in our tourism industry, or using social media to advocate for change. Our young people continue to harness the power of clicks to make significant progress in various sectors, including education, healthcare, tourism, agriculture, sports and governance.

While in the past, some saw our youth as merely an aspirational group with energy but lacking experience, and possessing passion but in need of focus, it is clear today, that such references have shifted.

But although young people have made significant progress, many challenges remain, particularly in accessing digital resources. The digital divide is critical as many young people still lack reliable internet access, digital literacy, and the necessary tools to participate fully in the digital economy. We must ensure that all young people, regardless of their background, can access and leverage digital tools to improve their lives and communities.

But addressing these challenges, will require the collaboration of the government, private sector partners, and civil society to invest in the upgrade of our digital infrastructure. We must provide continuous training and education, and create platforms for young entrepreneurs to thrive. We must also introduce inclusive policies that will empower all of our youth.

For the young people of Antigua and Barbuda their time for leadership has come. They continue to remind us through their digital contributions how effective communication and interconnectivity can advance national development. It is therefore our duty to ensure that our youth are fully equipped to take their place as the leaders of tomorrow by facilitating their innovation, creativity and growth. By empowering our youth through effective digital pathways, we can accelerate progress towards creating a better future for all Antiguans and Barbudans.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY!

  1. Both of these Most Honourable and distinguished UPP politicians recognise that our young are the natural progression to future growth on this great island of Antigua.

Encouragement, endeavours and endearment of our youth is the only way that the overwhelming bandage by the ABLP can be broken.

I ENDORSE THIS GREAT YOUT’ INITIATIVE โœŠ๐Ÿพ

  2. I’m all for encouraging the youth to learn technology, but it is a mistake not to teach or have them master the fundamentals first. They still need to PROPERLY learn reading, writing and arithmetic, traditional skills etc. The future is unpredictable. People need to know how to survive both with and without technology. Using technology without knowing the background to it in detail also dumbs a person down and limits how much use a person can make of it. I hope the schools can get this right.

  3. Japan is a technologically advanced society. Japan is also a society in which elders are highly respected. Unlike many other countries, Japan uses technology in practical ways that really improve people’s quality of life. I believe this is because of the mutual respect between the old and the young. Young people are good at using technology, yes, but older persons are good at understanding what is realistically needed to improve society. There should be more dialog between both groups. I would never trust someone to solve a problem for me or guide my life if they don’t first dialog with me to understand my POV. So, yes the youth should be engaged more in all sectors but not thrown into leadership without sufficient understanding of what is needed. Whilst trying to innovate, they should strengthen their projects by being humble enough to seek counsel or historical information from those who came before them, and assist with preexisting projects to gain experience. On the other hand, older persons should be willing to hear them out and provide support, financial and otherwise, for their innovative ideas once the ideas are useful and sound.
