LETTER: Women, Take Care of Yourselves — The Housework Can Wait

Dear Editor,

Too many women in Antigua and Barbuda are quietly burning out. Every day, I see young mothers, wives, and daughters pushing themselves to the limit — juggling full-time jobs, caring for children, managing households, and still trying to keep a smile on their faces. We cook the meals, wash the clothes, help with homework, run errands, and somehow still find time to show up at work and in our communities. But at what cost?
It’s time we faced a hard truth: we are not superwomen, even if we pretend to be.

Our society often praises women for “holding everything together,” but rarely do we talk about the toll it takes. Many of our women are exhausted, anxious, and stretched so thin that their physical and emotional health is breaking down. Hypertension, heart disease, and chronic fatigue are rising, not just among older women, but among those in their 20s and 30s. Stress is silently killing us.

Ladies, this is your reminder: it’s okay to rest. It’s okay to leave the dishes until morning. It’s okay to say no. The laundry can wait; your life cannot. Take that nap. Go for that walk. Schedule that doctor’s appointment you’ve been putting off. Breathe. Laugh. Take time for you.

Self-care is not selfish, it is survival. We cannot pour from an empty cup. When you rest, you heal. When you take care of yourself, you set a powerful example for your daughters, nieces, and friends.

To the men and families reading this: support the women in your lives. Share the responsibilities. A healthy woman makes for a healthy home, and a healthy home builds a stronger nation.

Women of Antigua and Barbuda, please, put yourselves on your own priority list. The housework will still be there tomorrow, but you must be here to see it.

Take care of yourself. You deserve it.

Sincerely,
A Concerned Sister

  1. I’m going to be real with you. Housework cannot wait long enough for your body to rest in any meaningful way because: a) there is nobody else there to pitch in and help or take a load off. This applies even and especially when a man is in the house, thinking you are his live-in maid.

And b) you better get up and JUMP to do your laundry when APUA feel sorry for you and send likkle water, because by the time you “rest” that water asking you what you looking for.

It is literally a cycle of stress and burnout; I have no idea how I am surviving this or how anyone else is getting through.

The article is RIGHT nuh. It is just the holy grail in terms of being able to actually apply.
Generally housework left unattended because more housework for the same one person. *bawling in fedup, sick and weary*

  2. As a mother I can say its not easy doing so. Whenever I got days off, I would say im going to the beach or the movies ,but it never did happen because of too much chores n errands to ran. Smh its just too much h at time

  3. I was caught up with housework, taking care everyone and everything except myself. While my husband studying and still found time to cheat. It’s gonna be all about me. Self Love.
The house can remain as is, food gets cooked when I’m able. Being the perfect wife doesn’t guaranty a faithful husband and a happy life.

  4. Some of these ladies nowadays just damn lazy. You do not see the men working and giving you and his family his all…. Something even side dudes do. Stop complaining and do your job as women. Men work and take care of your family. These women only know what men go through until they have son(s). Take care of your house and family without complaining. Talking about house chores can wait… nasty some of y’all nasty. Look nice on the road and rat and roach take residence in y’all homes.

  5. Why you dont go and wash your own damn dishes and cook your own damn food and clean your own damn house, Neil?
Y’all love come up under conversations meant to empower women and try to degrade women and in the end y’all just end up sounding more bit@chy than any women in the conversation.
Im sure your car full of garbage and your nail beds want to clean. As for then smelly shoes of yours, ah you dat. We ain’t cleaning s#it for you!!!
