LETTER: Will He Ever Return To The Land Of Wood And Water?

127

Dear Editor,

I have been meaning to pen this letter for quite a while but I just found the time. Based on my recollection, it has been more than two years since this Buffong gentleman appeared on our local television station.

My understanding is that the gentleman was hired for a short period to make suggestions for improvement of ABS. However, since that time, he appears to have thrust himself in the spotlight while pushing talented Antiguan citizens like Terry Andrew to the background. There is nothing that this man can do that Terry cannot do. We want to be the face of our local TV, our only TV, and not be relegated to regional, international and sports.

I think I understand why Mr Buffong likes Antigua so much. He is very well paid, he sees an income in Antigua he could only dream about in Jamaica. He drives a vehicle for free and he gets to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the island.

But Jamaica is beautiful too, it is richly blessed so why not return to the land of wood and water?  It seems he will join the ranks of the Dominican at the port, Indian at  Customs and others whose temporary stints become fixtures while qualified Antiguans are left in the shadow.

We have talent too. I am sorry that Sharon had to leave, she was one of us and we loved her. The failure of ABS to retain local talent is a crying shame!

Shame Shame Shame

  1. Whoever wrote this is a genius! Those foreigners are every where eating off our table while we picking up crumbs from the ground… Pure fu*ry and poor leadership from the top down

      • Yaadie you seen any Antiguans in foriegn spotlight besides sports?? Jus try stay in yuh lane please.

          • He/she can’t, it would put them in the spotlight and dem cyaan manage that. Badmind !

        • You are so right. We Antiguans and Barbudans are not in any of the Caribbean islands high government job spot light…not even a high position job in any of these islands. Something must be wrong with us here in this twin island state for us to continue allowing this crap. I always believed in sending our native oversea for cross training instead of bringing people here to do it. Because once they get here and get a taste of the benefits, they don’t want to leave. They want to boss us around.

        • Fck that yard man there yow. Not even university graduate from antigua can get jobs or proper jobs here in antigua where they’re born but yet alot of foreigners in big positions making money here. We can’t do these shit in their country and our leaders make it so. But God doesn’t sleep. As you can see time is changing very fast. I keep on the good work being positive and ambitious. Fk you all help and assistance. God in the making. I have my own and thank God for that. No politician or anyone can say they made me. In fact they all tried to break me. You’re all mass distractions. I go for mines. One man I praise and that k for that God Almighty.

      • Yes Yardie all a we a one they brought us on the slave ships and distributed families throughout the western hemisphere. Love all my black brothers and sisters

        • The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof. The world belongs to all of us, as long as we abide by rules and laws governed by whatever island or country

      • sometimes our own Antiguans friends and families cause us to compromise our jobs, soon as they know where we work . they always want
a favour or something for free . and we as the workers dont know when to say no.In this case some of the shows or programs are good ideas, the antiguan tend to be less professionals at times and sometimes shows seems ghetto

        That’s just how i feel.
I appreciate how he prepares himself before doing an interview, and the way his questions are structured. one tend to walk away with a better understating. the other should also follows suit.

      • Why the profanity Yaadie? You look fooly when you do that, or at least simple minded. Did you go to school? Who raise you?

        • Conrad .. currently enrolled in University.. profanity is needed because I’m still of yall bashing other nationality not only Jamaicans as tho Antiguans not living and working in other ppl countries too ..

          • Maybe that “devil at the top at ABS” is the real problem. Seems so. No more dictators who think more highly of themselves than they ought to think. Time for a real change over there. Garfield did his work, but that finish now. He can move on. The “one at the top” needs to be changed or replaced by a broadcasting professional.

          • In second thought I wonder if the mis representation of his name was deliberate or your lack of attention for details.

          • So if an Antiguan is more qualified and they are those who are…. a Jamaican should just be allowed to waltz in and fill the spot? You my friend are an idiot.
But you all are DESPERATE to stay here so I guess you have to say that.

        • Guy Antiguan’s, in the past, have gone as far as being editors of at least one newspaper in Jamaica. Outside the region think you know there are Antiguans who have held major positions in the US? Recall one being the CEO of an airport in Atlanta. Free your mind

          • Aren’t there Antiguans living in other Caribbean islands who are qualified and enjoying the land unlike the locals? Btw how peaceful is Anu? and just suggest that he can only dream of making whatever he is making in Anu in the land of wood and water. I guess is the same way those who live up North think of those of us who live in these parts.

        • If they qualified…they defintely would. We have other islanders here in really good positions. What’s wrong with Antiguans y they don’t THINK they can make the grade ?

      • Amen Yaadie….when will we learn?!! None of these (black skin brothers and sisters) you call foreigners would have those positions if they weren’t qualified!! Stop complaining about what who have…..go get qualified if you’re not….and if you are, demonstrate professionalism and stop trying to keep down your own Antiguan people when you get position. If you “Antiguans” would stop complaining you would realize this is 2020…the world is a melting pot/divers,e and with all of your foreigner this and foreigner that I wander what would happen if no one comes here….then what? The white people you so embrace like foolish slaves will continue to use and spit on you!! For the record I AM ANTIGUAN….born and raised!!! I am sooo ashamed of your bad ways!!!

        • Those , “A YA MEH BARN ” days are gone guys. Step up to be recognised or move aside. That’s the world we live in.

        • That has to be where the problem lies. Jeez ! Uplift each other man. Big up unoo self ! My God….all that whining don’t sound good on ur part. ….sounds like u all wallowing in self pity. U see anither Antiguan with potential don’t stop ‘big dem up’ till they reach the top…..then others will follow

      • I’m Anitguan! and I totally agree with you, like they don’t be in other ppl countries eat up what they have and a lot of antiguans be living in ppl place illegally, so no need to treat ppl like this and y’all behave the same bull crap and God know nuff awee lazy.

    • And there you said it!!!!!
Thank you for reading my thoughts and the thoughts of many other forward thinking Antiguans.
Only in Antigua do we as Antiguans place others before our own!

    • Have you ever thought of what would happen to antigua if these foreigners and I mean all of them would pack up and go the hell where they came from. It would be a crying shame, since all your antiguans run to Canada england and america and by the way do ot contribute to the social security system like the foreigners do. Maybe you people should have a meeting with social security to find out who is contributing the most in the system. It is FOREIGNERS . Without them Antiguans would not enjoy their sa benefits. So when you bash the foreigners think twice before you post

    • Shame shame shame. The author of this letter needs to be ashamed of him/herself. I think that’s why they didn’t attached their name to the letter. I say no more.

    • A nuh fi dem fault unoo nuh brite enuff fi handle unoo bizniz, either that or unoo damn lazy or too complacent

    • Let me say very well written and i do understand your position. Jamaican are very creative dominat people an I can see why their presence is so dominat, we were the rebellious slaves always looking for a way out of slavery and when we get that opportunity we are very good at whatever it is and it tend to hold on to us for a while.
Two years past and Garfield is still here well!!!
I look in America daily i my heart hurt daily cause clearly black lives doesn’t matter.
The inequality been shown quote and quote brothers and sisters (families and friends).
I laugh because here in Antigua I watch our same skin color brothers and sisters tear each other down with thr same skin color… are you wrong for feeling invaded by us Jamaican? Is the white American wrong for feeling invaded by black, mexican, spanish?
I laugh cause I see daily how the white or other ethnicity people live in Antigua make millions of $ nobody care openly are seems to have the balls to be opinionated about that!
I work in hospitality industry ad again i laugh because the little man sometimes middle class foreign (non national Jamaican) workers are the one that get abused verbally openly just like this by Antiguan.
We have a pandemic check who mostly stays on pay role and who stay home? I again laugh.
While those same white people getting paid they start a business hire one or two little antiguan worker and we are blindsided by this gesture while they build an empire and creatively engraved themselves in society then he are she sponsors a few events and where they from is not that loud any more..talk about mental slavery. Most of these case if been Jamaican there would be no end to this. Isn’t tourism yours but check who benefited the most from it the white people.
I totally support culture and the need to preserve it, but if a white man can do it why not a Jamaican? Opportunities are here sometimes local do not take advantage of it.
The Canadian form worker program you now how much of my young colleagues i call and send the link to they not interested, security these are some of the areas local don’t care for. We dont think about the job we think about getting our foot in and once we do we shine bright like a diamond and evolve…turning nose up sometime you can miss a great opportunity above and beyond sometimes is what local tends to lack base on my observations in the field i work.
The white men always manages the prominent areas of business and local becomes assistant with no given amenities.
Stop been so racist and badmind towards us. When we are good embrace us when we are bad get the rid a ahwe!
      We are all God’s children.
I too love Terry and all the other A BS Team. uch love

    • I think the person who penned the article is more a buffong than the person he/ she is referring. Just to mention that Miss Sharon Tazwell is one of us- which BTW I have no problem with her been a part of the team- but to claim her as one of us is not exactly correct- Garfield Burford qualifies more as one of us as a Black Caribbean man- Sharon was only born in Antigua of American parentage- she may be an Antiguan citizen by birth but she is American by nationality- if I go to Lebanon and give birth does that make my child a Lebanese? Or is she/ he a Citizen of Lebanon? I am 💯 sure that Sharon sees herself as American. The entire letter is just filled with hate and jealousy

  2. Terry also provided the next best thing that he would have seen for the day. That’s was funny. Remember the one where the men had to climp up the greasy pole with a pig in hand? That was funny!

  3. I guess all Antiguans abroad who have high positions in other countries should be shipped home too.

    • Yep was wondering the same thing. Notice not a word about the white expatriates who work at senior level at stations here. A Jamaican with a free movement CARICOM cert is the problem? I have much respect for Terry but he is not at Burford level as yet, and last time I heard was being mentored. Who is being mentored at the media houses with the white expatriates? All of us must grow

        • Not a disgrace but very dumb and racist . Then talking about black life’s matter , and sticking his knee in his same black man throat . I know a lot of Caribbean people has some decent jobs in some of those big countries. Smh to this person who hates his own fellow BLACK man. Pure evil.

  4. I enjoy Mr. Burford’s contributions. He is part of our Caribbean family. He is NOT harming or endangering or breaking the law as far as I’m aware. Keep up the great work Garfield. Let the haterz fall back.

  5. It is very simple the foreigners would do what they are told to do regardless if it is the right or wrong thing to do. If it is the wrong thing Antiguans would protest. Government want people they can control.

    • Most Antiguan don’t want no damn work. Cause the foreigner come here be working and living better love dan some a unuh. Unuh was gwaan say. Mi know forgiener who come here and have dem own house and so and some a unuh Antiguan affi a pay rent inna unuh own land. So come on stop hating and try to build each other. Ppl just sick mi now a days 🙄

      • My only problem with some foreigners is some are here in Antigua and they are not paying taxes time and don’t even have a work permit as long they are doing the right things and contributing to our island I don’t have a problem

      • Aaaaw. Look at you with your poorly thought out post. You mean Antiguans don’t want to do security work… like many Jamaicans do or lie on our backs like many Jamaicans or rob people like many Jamaicans? Sure that’s hard work. Jamaicans flock to Antigua and damn near now outnumber us because of the work of Antiguans that have created the landscape for the masses to prosper. Think visionaries like Sir VC Bird who made education more widely available and Sir Lester who energized our economy to make us the envy of The Caribbean and “big countries” like Jamaica which did not want anything to do with regional integration now want to live here because of the framework created by ANTIGUANS. There are qualified Antiguans. Excellent broadcasters. What do you know about Shawn Nicholas, Jamilla Kirwan, ANDY LIBURD, ANDERSON EDGEHILL. Antiguans have done outstanding work and are more qualified than this buffoon. We have had outstanding ANTIGUAN talent and if that devil at ABS was open to allowing an Antiguan in the top spot, there would be no shortage in the talent pool.

          • Take your country back you all dont even know what you want lol.. Gaston and him son own a few property..listen you all want to take it back isnt he Antiguan? foreigners we shouldn’t feel offended because they do it to each other crab in s barrel.. so not open to progression.
I have friends working in government system and when you hear the level of unproductive…’ness’ with Antiguan workers i am ashamed. Some go clock in and then leave returning when its time to go home…who manage this? We keeping it local…
APUA omg check it out local listen to the cries mismanagement and unproductive again.. hotel omg the amount of sick calls always want Sunday’s along with Saturday and all the other fete days who are these? We keeping it local.
Before this Covid19 thing oh laawd you want to hear how they curse their workplace who now calling and begging they even no more want severance.. they were the most unproductive again… we keeping it local.
As I say before just as you are saying that Jamaican increases crime rate so said the white people about black, mexican, spanish etc…
Bunch of hypocrites bout black lives matter! SOME Antiguans are just as bad as them white people who are racist.
each endeavoring all achieving Antigua land we love!

        • Then how the hell did Garfield get that position ? (Don’t answer…its rhetorical) . Take your country back yah my dear

      • Y’all mfs need to stop being jealous off we Jamaicans because we work twice as hard as you guys the things we have to go through has non-national
It’s hard we all are apart of one bodie so we need to unite and stop trying to pull down a next man because off is nationality

If he wasn’t good they wouldn’t have sent for him

I know if all Jamaicans should leave Antigua now y’all economy would decrease in a second

And y’all treat Jamaicans like shit and if y’all go to Jamaica you would be treated as king and queen stop pulling us down
        Because of are criminal rates

        • Why your mouth so dirty and nasty. Why the profanity? That usually a sign of a fooly person. If Jamaica so great, why you here cursing Antiguans. You couldn’t make it in Jamaica, obviously. There are many good, decent, Christian Jamaicans living in Antigua, but it seems you ain’t one of them.

        • Crime rate impacted by Jamaicans? In Jamaica where you all heartlessly kill your own in droves but will somehow treat Antiguans like royalty? And if Jamaicans contribute so greatly to our economy, how come y’all can’t help yourselves? Give me the exchange rate of the pitiful Jamaican dollar so I can laugh myself to sleep, thanks.

    • You can’t be living in Antigua and carrying that opinion. Education system, police force, Health care system, GOVERNMENT OWNED INSTITUTIONS, have been struggling because of who? foreigners? Which Antiguan protesting for elderly ANTIGUANS not getting pension or the ANTIGUAN children without subject teachers in their classrooms, or the ANTIGUANS who continuously get poor health care? Where the protesting Antiguans?Oh wait, Foreigners responsible for that too, right?

  6. Totally agree with your comments Antiguans must come first in their own country. Nobody go run me from me from come from.

  7. I will be objective here and show Mr Buford the respect he deserves. He is one of the most professional and articulate news anchors in the Caribbean. Even they may not be as good as him I have total confidence in Alajandro Robinson, Shermaine Jeremy and Andy Liburd leading the newscast. Terry Andrews has some good stretches but he seems to always predictably have some instances of fumbling and stage fright. Once he gets that under control Terry will be fine, but for right now he’s not in my local top 3.

  8. This letter speaks for all of us. He needs to be on the next CAL Flight. He isn’t doing anything that we cannot do with the talent here in Antigua.

  9. We need him to come back to Jamaica, we miss him. He has more news to report in Jamaica, come home and server your country bro.

    • BUT can he get a job in Jamaica? He did a good work here, but his time is up. Jamaica calling. Hope he gets work there.

      • We have enough media house where he would be more than welcome to work. He got brain no one can take that away from him.

  10. If Antiguans would stop shunning certain jobs, do what is needed to be hired in certain positions, they wouldn’t have this problem! That a da ting with ayu, ayu cuss fa ebrybody that na name Antiguan that inna high positions yet sit down on y’all asses n expect position fa come to ayu! Look at the Tourism industry many want to get into certain positions but lack a simple requirement as knowing a foreign language to do so n when u tell an Antiguan to learn one, the first thing comes to their mouth “who ya talk? Wa me can do with Spanish, French or whatever” simple minded fools! Build up ayu self fuss, start from the ground n come up like a lot of these “foreigners” that have positions! Then if y’all still get looked over that a when ayu fa cuss! This letter ya a pure trash n yes me a Antiguan too!

  11. Its very unfortunate that we are bashing this gentleman because of his nationality.
There are many Antiguans who are in various countries other than in the media who holds tops positions.
The man is a law abiding person who post no treat to anyone .
Yes I do agree other locals can probly do his job but I honestly think some need some exposure in various areas and need more knowledge of how the media operates.
Garfield I would believe would not his knowledge stay within himself but pass it onto other colleagues so in the event he leaves others would be more knowledgeable than they were before.

  12. Typical Antiguans, last week was St. Kitts, now it’s time to target Jamaicans. It’s always foreigners that are the problem and not the lack of ambition within your own countrymen, eh? Keep that same energy with the Saudis and Chinese that own land and citizenship and have never set foot in your country. Where are you Antiguans in other countries, some of you don’t even know what your own airport looks like.

  13. WOW!
Then everything must be Antiguan made, born and WOW!
Such denseness, such leave me at lost for words…
Small minds… Dense thinking and attitude…
I’m flabbergasted! Hopefully no family members residing and working in another country or on another island ever take their hard earned money to assist people back home… Sincerely FLABBERGASTED!

  14. Burford is a black man from Jamaica.Burford,if you were Chinese and or White that would be okay. You are of the wrong color and ethnicity.Come on people,we are better than that. There are many of us in other countries.Who have held top level positions in businesses in those countries. What would you say if all of us were fired. You would be singing the song of discrimination.I am a black man from Antigua.I have lived and worked all over this Nation,USA and in Europe.I have held top level positions within the Managements structures. So it should be the skin and or where the person comes from.It should be about contributions. What levels of competencies the person brought into the Corporation.

  15. QUOTES FROM THE GREAT MARCUS GARVEY
A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots. Hence they don’t consider us to be one people. Lost souls.

If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life. That’s why we hold our heads high wherever we go.

Africa for the Africans… at home and abroad! Hmm, some don’t know what that means.

Liberate the minds of men and ultimately you will liberate the bodies of men.

Chance has never yet satisfied the hope of a suffering people. My lips are sealed.

  16. This truly disturbers me!
Do you know how many ANTIGUANS And other nationals I have employed here in the states…
To read this editorial shocks the Panties off of me… SHAME SHAME SHAME really has a hard on for this newscaster and a bias against foreigners… I pray that none of this persons relatives ever receive the KARMA that’s being stewed here!
    I’m so very shocked!
    Still FLABBERGASTED!

  17. WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE OF THESE POSTS, BECAUSE THE VOLUME AND FREQUENCY OF THESE ARTICLES SHOULD COMMENSURATE WITH GARFIELD’S LEVEL OF IMPORTANCE.
    WE A BIG DEAL
KEEP THEM COMING. ONE A WEEK WILL DO

  18. Antigua has been a dumping ground for Jamaicans for quite a while now. Sow the wind and reap the whirlwind! Since Antiguans can not count they will be feel the impact of numbers when they think they can have open borders with Jamaica. Under the pretense that one Antiguan is living in Jamaica they send thousands of Jamaicans to live in Antigua and call it fair. Jamaicans make up near 30% of Antigua and Antiguans living in Jamaica make up under 1% of Jamaica but yet people push this statistic as fair because many people can not count.

Culturally Jamaicans are different as well. Jamaicans are accustomed to a high level of violence and chaos which is never good for the majority of the population. The Jamaican way of living is not a sustainable way of living and ultimately leads to a sufferer state. Antigua was a true paradise compared to Jamaica, but now will become more like Jamaica.

    • You seem to be one of those who can’t count:

      30% of Antigua population 80k = 24k
      1% of Jamaica population 3mil = 30k

  19. The point is there are people already at ABS and those who were there before who can do the job. We have been more then welcoming to CARICOM nationals. On the point of other media houses these are private entities but we are taxpayers funding ABS we have to be concerned.

  20. Why can’t he get a high paying job working for BROGAD? Asking for a friend. Give Andy Liburd the job.

  21. The Gm busy commenting under different names to defend her golden boy. signed ABS staff.

    • Yes, Sharon Miller-Tazewell IS missed, too. She Antigua born (at the old Holberton Hospital, and always calls Antigua “home”. She is a professionally trained journalist who worked for NBC and CBS. She and Bufford seemed to work well together, and Terry, too. She wanted to return home to contribute to the broadcasting industry here, and she made a valuable contribution. Her behind the scenes work at ABS helped to improve the station tremendously. Rumors say she would not have left if she would have been paid when and what was due to her. Somebody in management must be responsible for that silliness. We can’t expect our anchors to work and not be paid….or have to wait for months before they are. She will be missed. Hopefully, they can persuade her to return to ABS.

  22. once they come here and they see a little money they stuck for life. He will never leave Antigua cause no one dumb enough to pay him what we the tax payers pay him

  23. Democracy is alive and well in Antigua. Let all ideas contend. We may not always like what people say but we must respect their right to say it. Personally, I don’t agree but there are some who do.

  24. Our biggest problem that we are facing in the Caribbean is racistim among ourselves until we accept ppl for ppl human being as human then we will be stuck right where our fore parents left us .we as a ppl as nation’s we discreminate and bring down each other too often if we want to unite as one Caribbean we have to learn to share what we have with each other let that be a start for us then and only then we can move on from 1600 where our fore parents left us show some love we hate each other too much no matter where you come from we a one African ppl

  25. He’ll probably be here as long as he bows down and licks the boots of the manager. Has any one considered that maybe the real problem is the management???

  26. Oh wow we are really in the last days .rasicm black against black lord help us people love each other be happy for one another in love and unity

  27. Think they should scrap came because you all want to work in people country but not in Antigua it’s looking ugly .

  28. This is exactly why Liat is faced with the problem it has now. We are always fighting each other. I for one thinks that there are certain jobs that should be for just born and bred Antiguans. But we have to face reality some Antiguans dont want to work so others have to do it. I think the guys does a wonderful job and should be commend. Instead of tearing him down why not encourage him to continue the good job. The others need to aligned themselves with him and learn a few things. Stop tearing down each other.

  29. I stand with the Jamaicans in this comment section. I am 100% Antiguan and I find my own kind to be bad minded cause allot of bullshit taking place here and no antiguans stand up for one another. And he made a point look at how we treat Barbudans! And barbudans have more sense than us cause they aren’t brainwashed and selfish like Antiguans. In Antigua it seems like wise me a eat to hell with the rest. We stand up for nothing and love see ugly.

  30. Yardie stf up.Hope they deport your stinking soon. We don’t want you poor ass hungry mothers here😝

  31. Once again Antiguans have proven what we Jamaicans know…..dem badmind, grudgeful and entitled.

It is even less surprising that they have managed to remain jealous and UNSKILLED. I would recommend that Antiguans, like the writer of the article, look within themselves and ask ” why are non-nationals being hired for high paying jobs here?”. The answer is simple.

Most Antiguans do not possess the qualifications to perform the job. Every year you import lawyers, doctors, engineers etc. Antiguans are quite content with attending state college, eating bread & cheese, living in dilapidated RENT houses while driving “new” cars.

Its all misplaced hatered and if they directed their energy into personal improvement….maybe there would be less need for non-national hires.

UNUH LOVE WATCH PEOPLE BUSINESS WHILE HAVING NO BUSINESS OF YOUR OWN.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR, put down that slice of Brownies bread & cheese i know you are stuffing down your throat hole and go learn a skill.

    AS YOU WERE!!!!!!

    • Thank you.
Racist, Small-minded, Entitled, Lazy, Less-than-mediocre, Badminded indivduals. THey hate foreigners and they have won the battle with me because neither love nor money can get me back there. My growingcompany hires and embraces people from all over the caribbean but ufortunately no Antiguan can get my help. Karma. They have treated me and my famly like shit during our time. I almost yielded to the urge to spit in a few faces daily. Trump minded people. The only few with sense are the few who hav eleft this cocoon of ignorance and have seen the wider world.

  32. The point here is seriously , and purposely, missed. I happen to know Mr Burford personally and he seems a good soul. However, he did say to me that he was here for a period of time-a contract I believe. Now he does seem kind of permanent and just like at Customs, at Immigration at one point , at port etc, it does seem like a pattern has developed where Antiguans are passed over for top positions.
That is a concern and should trouble all of us. I am sure Jamaicans, or others, who are here long enough to have adult Antiguan children are also be concerned at this.
That is really the point of the article; may not have been nicely stated but what is the point of training our young Antiguans and Barbudans if all we do is to allow those who we bring in provide temporary expertise, to stay around thus keeping young Antiguans from reaching their full potential. I here add, it happens nowhere else!
The other thing that is noticed is that our young people having not being used gravitate to other places so now we are caught in a vicious cycle from which we will not escape without effort to do so.

  33. Antiguans only have energy for Jamaicans. Lol Where is this energy for the white expat journalist here? All Antiguans do is cotch up unda white people batty

    • She is Antiguan god dam…just like u have white and Chinese Jamaican….SHE BORN YA….and nobody more racists than Jamaicans in JAMAICA

  34. I’m not for bashing Mr. Garfield Burford because he’s an outstanding journalist but I think why most persons are triggered is because since his arrival at ABS as a “consultant” he hasn’t done anything to help develop and mature reporters who demonstrated the potential at ABS. They are one set of persons at the station hugging the spotlight while the likes of Amar Spencer-Sayers, Jnore Smith, Alciana Tittle, Azaria Lavia, Nicola Barritteau, Sharon Miller Tazewell, Patrice Martin, Yori Taylor and others walked away because of the poor management style, lack of building up staff moral and presenting them with the opportunities to develop themselves and make a contribution to the land of their birth.
Budding reporters like Shariffe Sergeant, Jessica Russell and Leon Norville have the potential to be just as good or better they hold degrees and training in Journalism and they are currently suppressed and never given a chance to take center stage and show their worth.
Let’s not forget Jaime Roacher who consistent delivers interesting and engaging stories.
Terry Andrew who is suppose to be way ahead of the game than he is now and our veteran reporters like Andy Libird, Joel Rayne, Cheralyn Beazer and Jack Matthew.
Ali and Shermain are also good talent.

Look at the number of local professionals who can be spread evenly across the station and not have the same one or two persons on TV every minute of the day.

ABS has lost good journalist and will continue too unless the issues are looked at closely and objectively.

One hundred Frenchman can’t be wrong!

And the PS of the Information Ministry for God sake do your job and stop letting the GM of ABS run the Ministry and give you directives on how you should carry out your work. You are the boss of the Ministry not her!

Hopefully after next year January when the GM’s contract is up we will see a professional broadcaster in that position like Sharon Miller Tazewell taking ABS and ALL their staff not just some to higher heights.

Mr Garfield Burford Thank You for making your self the center of attention and state media’s leading man but it’s time to step down and give our own journalist with the drive and potential to build a name within the industry for themself.

You are a driven professional and there are bigger opportunities out there for you.

    Signed Former ABS Employee.

    • That may be the problem too. They give up and run. Stay and fight for what u think u deserve. Show them u can do better than any foreigner….and if him doing better than u…watch his style, tweek it to make it ur own and outshine him…but no….u all want to wallow in self-pity and whine. Disgusting

      • @Y’all….see that’s, the point. Antiguans have to fight overseas and still have to fight in their homeland?? Doesnt something seems strange and wrong to you??

  35. Antiguans (some) are so small minded and selfish it’s beyond mind boggling. All those who are up in arms for the removal of the good gentleman Mr. Burford from ABS, (and I have been following this diatribe for a while every time Mr. Burford is on the news) ask yourself the question, Did Mr. Burford just waltz himself into ABS and just push some Antiguan out of a job and inserts himself? If that’s the case well then you have a valid point. But if not it just highlights the magnitude of your small mindedness. I always hear Antiguans complaining that there are too many foreigners in Antigua and they are taking away Antiguan jobs. And the irony is that all ah dem who chatting have family members living and working in other people’s country, and when Antiguans achieve top position in any of those countries, it’s blazoned all over the news networks. Y’all need to just chill and get a life. Mr. Burford I’m sure earned his keep at ABS or he won’t be there, and if any one of you chat bout think you are more or evenly qualified for his job, we’ll go for it nah…. Bunch of Id..ts.
    Ah suh me seh.

  36. If the gentleman is qualified for the position, why not? I’m an Antiguan living abroad and whenever I tune into the news it’s always refreshing to hear the young man. He displays a high level of professionalism. Why even publish such a poorly written letter? Yes everyone is entitled to an opinion but not everything is news wordy. This letter has disrespect, degradation and badmind stamped all over it. This is 2020, the young man did not promote himself, I see people on here requesting that he steps down and go back to Jamaica. Such backward thinking! Time for Antiguans to embrace our Caribbean people who are contributing and making a difference. Whenever, I think of ABS news Mr. Burford is the one that stands out, the man is professional plain and simple.

  37. I got sick by reading some of these comments and how small minded people are. What is it so about Jamaica that these other Caribbean islands have such hatred for us. I live in trinidad, I’m a resident here. My son and husband is from here but all this I plan to walk away from because of shallow minded John public is.
At the end of it all, Jamaicans don’t treat other islanders like this when they come to Jamaica for whatever the reason is. And you’d be stupid to believe that it have no one from yall country living in Jamaica for whatever the reason might be.
    It’s just sickening.

  38. Most persons who say Antiguans are xenophobic towards Guyanese Jamaicans etc need to re examine themselves. These so called great countries as referred to by their own nationals have some high emigration numbers because their nation is economic trash. Recall them saying us small island states can’t even grow pumpkin because it’ll run off. Stupid mentally from them caused the West Indies federation to fail. To hell with CARICOM and to hell with them. Us small island states remain happy with our EC dollar and virtually crime free culture instead of the sick acts in these greater states. PROUD OECS MEMBER! I say Garfield must go and Terry Andrew takeover more locals in the spotlight please

    • Why the push for Terry Andrews, when there are others who are better than him. Alajandro Robinson, Shermaine Jeremy, Andy Liburd, Cheralyn Beazer and Anderson Edgehill are all better than him. Sorry, but Terry doesn’t even make my top 5.

  39. No he will not return!! Garfield stay as long as you need to. Enjoy the sun, sea, sand and good income!!

  40. I hope the writer of this letter is being sarcastic bu knows that the goodly gentleman’s name is Mr. Garfield BURFORD and not Mr. BUFFONG..

  41. This man calls everything a “major developing story”, rambles on and on and some people question whether Antiguans can do a better job? Andy Liburd or Anderson Edgehill can run circles around this joker.

  42. If the commenters are a representation of Antigua now I know why none of you are in a high profile position. Ignorance is bliss for you people. They brought in a Jamaican to assist in the weak areas and you guys having problem with that? If it was a whole person the dog would not be crying wolf! Y’all are some crab in the barrel and that’s why you people will remain in the position that you are and find favor with no one.
