LETTER: Why was the political leader not the first to be elected at the UPP convention?

Dear Editor,

It is normal for the political leader of a party to be the first elected in a party convention.

It is done everywhere, and Antigua and Barbuda is no exception.

This is so because the political leader is the most important person in the party.

He or she leads their party and also the nation if elected in a general election, and if chosen by their MP peers to be leader.

So here is the question. Why did the returning officer, announce the election of the chairman first, knowing that this is against the norm, and would be a very long process with the votes taken from six boxes and all the votes individually called and shown for all the judges to see?

When you were asked why you did this, it is reported that you said that you were told.

Told by whom? This must be known because then whoever told you to do that would have to explain where they got the authority to make this on-the-spot decision.

There were persons who came specifically to vote for the leader. They were on their way to work, other important events, etc.

They knew the vote for leader would be first.

The word is that some persons had to fight hard to get the vote for leader moved from the last place where they put it to right after the chairman vote, because the intention was to make the voting for the leader last.

Many had left during and after the count for the chairmanship.

By the time the vote was called for leader many people had left and there was a lot of hustling people and everything looking chaotic in the small voting area.

  1. That is a good question. I asked myself the same thing. After watching what transpired there, I came to the conclusion that there was a lot of hanky-panky that went on.

I believe the UPP has a thuggery department and it was in full force yesterday. That lady is a mob boss with full control of her minions, even the former big boys.

Nobody is going to win anything in the UPP unless she approves.

    • @ UPP thuggery on show

And who cares about what you think? Was your opinion or advice or analysis sought? LOL, LOL, LOL.
She will continue to give all of you heartburn. Accept your defeat in disgrace you minions, lol.

  2. To answer all your questions simply UPP is not a political party. It is a joke. Imagine having a political convention and 4 speakers have come from overseas (the Senator from Jamaica, the former MP from Trinidad, the Antiguan businessman from the US & Walker from Barbuda). This is unheard of but just demonstrates that the UPP has no one who can talk sense or energise their own supporters.

    • #Otto. Ok political assassin wanting to tell UPP how to do their business. Now tell us about the crime situation, the nepotism, the fact that your real joke of a govt raised taxes they say was for civil servants, then push their grabby hands in and take out the most. Those are the things that should concern you.

  3. THE WRITER SEEMS TO BE SOMEONE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO FIND BEING WRONG.LETTER WRITER,YOU ARE PICKING AT STRAWS. THEN AGAIN,A DROWNING PERSON WOULD HOLD ON TO ONE,A STRAW.

  4. Ma Barker and her boys, Shamu, Weiner and Nixie, are keeping the membership of the UPP in line using intimidation as part of their tactics.
Some voters said that they turned up at the branches and told them how they must vote, and who they must vote for. They were out in full force yesterday. They stood up in front of the doors that the members came through and flashed them the name of the candidate they must vote for.
BTW, this is against the rules of the code of conduct of the UPP. Ma Barker came to the media to demand that the rules are followed and immediately start breaking them to suit the candidate she is backing.

    • @ Ma Barker and her boys

Oh give it to hell up.. You minions keep trying to create havoc when there is no issue with the UPP elections.
Now over to the ABLP for your convention and primary for Lamin and Regis that cannot be completed because GASTON and CHET don’t know how to pull this one off as they know they have already coronated Lamming, but that all eyes are gazed on the EXPECTED theft to ‘Lamming, THE TRAITOR”
