LETTER: Tourism isn’t just cruise ships docking in St John’s

5 Cruise ships in St. John's Harbour

DEAR EDITOR:

I have just read the letter to Max Fernandez regarding being scored 8 out of 10 for tourism and I cannot doubt the improvement the cruise ships are having on the tourist industry in Antigua.

However tourism isn’t just cruise ships docking in St John’s it’s about families and couples, young people renting villas and apartments, staying in hotels and enjoying the beaches and surrounding areas which Antigua boasts about

So why are bars like this Gentleman’s Club allowed to open and cause no end of anti-social behaviour in a residential area which boosts tourism by renting out accommodation to overseas visitors ?

These visitors are complaining about the noise the club is creating until 4am in the morning, the cars racing around and playing extremely loud booming music when leaving the club, local men fighting and arguing at 4am after leaving the club, someone has mentioned they heard gunshots, these visitors are asking to leave the villas they are renting and have stated they will not return !

How can this be having a good impact on Antiguan tourism ?

This so called Gentleman’s Club which is no more than a strip joint for local men needs closing down – a local taxi driver advised someone it’s EC 20 entry and you can touch!!

Is this really what we want to be promoting to families who want to rent holiday homes on our beautiful island – why are licences being granted to these clubs or indeed has the club got a licence?

This club is degrading the area of Jolly Harbour and ruining local businesses which employ local trades, gardeners, pool maintenance men, plumbers, handymen all of which is having an impact on the local economy

Close this bar down; it does not belong in a residential holiday area!

  1. Maybe! maybe not! The only thing is certain is that that problem is all of us problem and we stand a better chance to solve it if we try collectively rather than individual nations.

  2. St. John’s needs a major facelift. Bringing cruise ships here is one thing but we can’t be proud of the rubbish heap that we have to offer. St John’s smell stink!

  3. Just right of the Cruise Pier is a Spanish Ghetto created by ABLP. There you can see one and two level shacks like they appear in Santa Domingo! Plus as one commenter says, the place run down and stink!
Antigua is in a bad place.

  4. Let us not forget the speech of the great American president…. ” it is not what your country can do for you but what you can do for country ” so to all the ney sayers & all those who love to rely on the govt for everything, play your part and our Tourism product will be alot better

  5. It’s one thing to make negative sentiments about your country, ( if indeed you’re from Antigua) but it’s also highly inappropriate to spread such negativity around the world. If I’m a potential tourist somewhere around the world seeking to travel to a Caribbean island and read comments that indicate an island is STINK, would I be interested in traveling to that island! It not a good thing to say negative sentiments about your country on a platform that sends its news around the world. Always seek to be a positive contributor to the problem, rather than one who seeks to tear down with words of discouragement. BE A SOLUTION TO THE ISSUES, WHETHER YOU LIKE THE GOVERNMENT OR NOT. IT’S STILL YOUR COUNTY.
