The Troubling Candidacy of Barbara Coates: A Call for Authentic Leadership

As the political landscape shifts with new candidates emerging, the debut of Barbara Coates as an official representative for the United Progressive Party (UPP) raises serious concerns among constituents of All Saints. As a committed supporter of the UPP, I believe it is imperative to expose the troubling truth behind her candidacy grounded in elitism and a history of disconnection from our community.

A Flawed Past

Barbara Coates has never been the “people person” and champion of the people that she now claims to represent. Many in Sea View Farm remember her as a teenager and young adult whose actions were marked by disdain and scorn towards those she deemed beneath her. This troubling history is far from bygone; it serves as a stark warning of the potential values she brings to her campaign.

The Pattern of Elitism

Coates’ history is not an isolated incident but rather a troubling pattern of behavior deeply embedded in her persona. Her past actions reflect a blatant disregard for the community’s needs and a selfish yearning for leadership that prioritizes her ambitions over the voices of the very people she now seeks to serve. The essence of her elitism clouds her qualifications as a candidate, prompting us to question: Do we want a leader whose qualities resonate with snobbery and elitism? Or can we aspire for something better?

A Call to Action

Now is the time for the UPP to critically examine the implications of her candidacy. It’s crucial for the party to explore alternative candidates who genuinely embody the core values of our community. One candidate who stands out is Harold Lovell—an individual who has consistently demonstrated integrity, compassion, and a dedication to serving our neighborhoods.

As supporters of our communities, we must make our voices heard. Let’s demand authentic leadership free from the shackles of elitism and self-interest. We will not be swayed by glossy presentations or empty promises; it is time to unmask the truth behind Barbara Coates’s elitism and firmly reject her candidacy.

Count Me Out!

In this critical moment, let us stand united. We deserve leaders who prioritize our community over their aspirations. It’s time to lift up candidates like Harold Lovell who align with our values, ensuring that the future of our leadership is in capable hands. Together, we can advocate for change and foster a political climate that reflects the true spirit of All Saints.

  1. I support the call for Harold Lovell to return to the battle field. However if you are a constituent and are certain of what you are saying why should you fear? Why have you withheld your name? You are a laboRAT. No one hides when speaking the truth except in circumstances where one fears for his life and safety. We have not gotten to this in Antigua. You are a laboRAT who fears that she will walk all over the Babyface Judas. Search your conscience and it’ll you make it past tonight go to church tomorrow and repent.

  2. Talk is cheap. The ABLP rabid dogs as some are now referring them to, seems to have caught the talking blues virus and has reversed the natural course of digestion from mouth to anus to become anus to mouth. CONGRATULATIONS the ABLP leadership has invented and patented The Ass To Mouth Syndrome🤮🤢🤮🤢🤮🤮🤢

  3. @Sraght Shooter:
Lol, you are acusing the author of the very same thing that you’re doing. You withheld your name. What are you scared is? Are you playing both sides? You people never cease to amaze me.

There will always be people who hold an opinion of you when you choose to offer up yourself for public. Your past indiscretions or lapse in judgment will always take center stage, even if you’ve learned from it and have moved on.

Serving people is at the highest level of esteem in our country. It’s called the “coveted title” for a reason.
    May the best person win.

  4. Making a case for Harold Lovell to riun in All Saints West by insulting yet another female contender for UPP leadership!???? You UPP guys, like your ChairMAN, are just haters of women. Since when did elitism and social disconnect concern UPP disciples? You have been embracing their actions and philosophy since you claim that you’re a faithful supporter. Then you go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like, to paraphrase, Harold Lovell, the epitome of leadership devoid of elitism social disconnection. You seem to be suffering from the sour grapes syndrome. However, you need not worry. Barbara is female and will be fed to the cannibals in your camp in short order. Maybe then there will be room for you and your bad-minded, misguided, anti-female psyche. You’re in the right camp. Maybe, in time, you will rise to the lofty position as cab driver of the Opposition Leader For Life, Harold Lovell.

  5. What a sick country, people say Turner is part of the elitist society but I guess that doesn’t bother you since you are all part of the lickspittle brigade and anything is acceptable but you have a problem with Miss Coates

  6. Barbara Coates embodies class and integrity, and she cannot be bought. It seems that her authenticity poses a threat to some people because she truly understands the needs and desires of the people. Attacking her is essentially an attack on the residents of All Saints West. The citizens of Antigua and Barbuda need to wake up and recognize the troubling direction our country is heading.

The current leadership is focused on undermining the opposition instead of prioritizing the needs of the people and the development of the nation. This strategy reveals their fear of the opposition, as they resort to financial tactics to secure their position in upcoming elections. Barbara Coates stands firm; she is a woman of principle, and no amount of money can sway her. Those who seek to undermine her are simply demonstrating their own weakness and lack of confidence in their leadership.

  7. BATOW already put blows on her for ABFA election 😆 🤣 😂 guess she want to try the politics thing to become a banging post.

FOOTBALL ⚽️ LOSER to political 🤡

  8. A trap! Lovell a trap! Don’t even academically entertain this set up with rebuttal, they want to test your integrity on your decision that you withdraw from politics, it is Gaston pushing this agenda to destroy your character as power hungry.

  9. I read this article with great anticipation because the headline made it seem like someone was actually being held accountable.
But the writer called Barbara elitist more than once without talking about what she did. Sometimes when a person, is quite frankly, ambitious, beautiful and/ or about something, people think the person is “elitist” or as we say in Antigua, “feel dem betta dan people” when we are the ones with an inferiority complex.

  10. Oh, what a tangled web we weave when deceit we endeavour to achieve!

The heart of man is deceitful above all things and, unless a man is righteous, there is ALWAYS a HIDDEN, selfish agenda. Therefore, instead of going back and forth trying to cast aspersions any which way, gird your loins and join the battle ‘gainst, fear, hate and poverty. That’s the ideal way to accrue relevance!

As we thrash candidates and bash representatives, the other fingers point to our own inadequacies. My question is: Do we even contribute to national development or, do we exacerbate the existing problems? Me nah lie; the semantics and empty political posturing grind my gears, especially as the last time I checked, it was vote by secret ballot. So, wise up and ease up on the asinine political soundbites.

Stop barking up the same WRONG ole tree and live in peace where man is free!

  11. Writer of this piece, you have been roasted enough. I won’t even bother with you. When people keep their noses clean, go to school and learn well, and have integrity, you and Gaston say that they are elitists, as you both said of Harold Lovell. Go find something better to do with yourself. Rather, go write about greedy Turner, the hypocrite that leases gov’t quarry and sells the aggregate back to the government.

  12. All Saints West – our system of choosing candidates is of concern and not Barbara Coates. In Antigua there is no system whereby someone can serve or get elected to a school board, a village council and move upwards to become an MP. Secondly these candidates are from one area within the constituency and have been chosen by their branches or members of the central executive since most of these branches within both parties do not function.
So let’s examine both the present PM and this UPP care taker. Anthony Smith was unknown within the entire All Saints West constituency. His mother is from Sea view farm and is well known there. Most people that live in Sea view farm did not know Anthony Smith. He was not known none of the other areas in the All Saints West constituency. Not even to this day is he recognizable in Buckleys , Freedoms Village or All Saints. See Chet Greene for example- he was known throughout Antigua and Barbuda as a person they was involved of all aspects of his community and the nation at large. George Whenner is more known today in St.Peters than Smith in All Saints West.
Barbara Coates – comes from a well known family in Sew View farm. He mother and father were well known farmers and Taxi drivers. He mother died at a very young age in a Vechicle accident on All Saints Road. Her father went about farming and taxi driving and raised his children as a single parent. He protected his girls and gave them the best education possible. They all became successful adults. Barbera is older than Anthony Smith. She is more known in See View farm than him because she grew up at a time when the villagers lived as one. Again Barbera like Anthony Smith is not recognizable out side of sea view farm.
Smith won the 2023 election for the constituency not because he was a good candidate. He won by default. Michael Browne defeated himself. Then what did Smith do with the people’s vote. He disrespected the people of All Saints and turned his back on them. Legal or not he is a hypocrite and there are clips where Gaston said he was talking to him before and after the election. Gaston threatened his colleagues that if anyone think because of his slim margin they can try to overthrow him , that Anthony Smith is ready and waiting.
Barnara is by far a more educated, more articulate person than Anthony Smith. I heard her during her campaign for president of Antigua Football Association. She came across as well organized and can become a formidable politician.
Today as it stands both Candidates- Anthony Smith and Barbara Coates if an election is to be called will be starting at the same point. Smith will have the government resources available to him and the ABLP voters. Barbara will have the UPP voters behind of her and those that feel slighted by Anthony Smith betrayal. The big point will be how much will what Anthony did affect the independent and swing voters.
There is no elites in any of the candidates. Barbara comes across as a far more confident person and it would be good to have a debate between both candidates.
They both need to convince the people of All Saints West that they are ready to represent and mean what they say when they campaign. That they are not there for personal gains. Smith will have to battle of honesty. Barbara will have to prove that All Saints west is read for a female MP.
