Dear Editor,
The contest between the two political candidates in the St. John’s Rural West constituency will be one to watch for this upcoming general election.
Michael Joseph in the red corner & Richard Lewis in the blue are two brilliant individuals. It is extremely unfortunate that both will be vying against each other to become the representative for the St. John’s Rural West constituency.
Interestingly, ingrained in their DNA, they both have in common, an impeccable character the OCS as their alma mater, UWI as their tertiary institution of learning and the Gray’s Green community as their place of birth & nurturing. Certainly, both individuals would be resourceful to the constituency under any ruling administration.
Now, if one looks back at the statistics for 2023 general election, one can conclude that Richard Lewis is presently ahead of the game by the 300+ votes that he won by and simultaneously having a psychological advantage of beating his opponent in 16 of 17 boxes and still operating in the shadows of Mr. Baldwin Spencer’s legacy.
On the other hand, should one look at the result for the ABLP’s primary election, when Michael entered the political ring, perhaps one can conclude that Micheal may have the advantage because his support was definitely overwhelming. He got persons to vote for him, who did not vote in the general elections. As a result, if those electorates stay with him, then Richard may end up similar to a donkey running in a horse race.
Michael’s strength seems to be relying on the support from the young people. Having that relationship with the young people is nothing new. It all started prior to him going into politics The question is .. will the young people go out to vote? On the other hand will Richard be able to maintain that 300+ lead and add to that amount? In addition, Richard may have on his side the support coming from persons who strongly believe that the constituency continued to be overlooked by another PM who has roots within the constituency. .
Overall, there has been some disappointments concerning both sides of the political divide. The leadership syndrome in UPP & the overlooking of die hard ABLP supporters has not been ignored. Therefore, the turn out to the polls may be lower than what we expect.
From my vantage point, It appears that Richard is in the right school (politics) but he is in the wrong class (UPP) this time around.
Should Richard lose and he is not made the leader of the opposition party, I would suggest for him to vacate UPP and seek an opportunity to work along with Michael Joseph to continue to develop the Rural West constituency. There is no doubt that they are both assets to the St. John’s Rural West constituency.
Alex

Richard Lewis is neither liked, wanted or needed by the UPP. Why he continues to tolerate disrespect is beyond me. George “HOUSE RENT” Wehner disrespected Richard wife and children at the last Convention when Pringle beat him. Any man who doesn’t stand up for his wife and children is weak.
I definitely agree with the author on this one…..
The winner takes it all…. My money is on Michael.
What contest???
The Honourable Richard Lewis has already shown that he’s more than capable of holding Gaston Browne to account in Parliament, so what chance does the unknown – and definitely – unproven Michael ‘Who?’ Joseph.
The writer Alex claims that Joseph has the “young vote”, however, Mr Lewis has the critical thinkers vote, as well as those Antiguans who wants a sea change.
I’m going to miss the beauty of this island 🏝
There is absolutely nothing to watch in the race between Richard Lewis and Michael Joseph.
It is chalk to cheese.
Richard Lewis is Rural West to tge bone.
Michael Joseph is a wanna be seen Rural West.
Richard Lewis has been at the forefront of the advocacy for Rural West.
Where has Michael Joseph been?
Richard Lewis is constantly advocating for Rural West.
Michael Joseph is part of the regime keeping the people in subjectivity and poverty.
The leader of Michael Joseph’s party told the peoe that they should go to the back of the line.
He never condemned that statement.
The leader was true ti his words.
Not one cent of tax dollars has been spent in the Rural West constituency.
While the constituency continues to be neglected Michael Joseph is singing, “how great, how great, goes great thou art”.
Whike he is worshipping his leader Richard Lewis is using his personal resources to improve on infrastructure and individual lives.
Richard Lewis works year round while Michael Joseph makes an appearance as elections approaches.
Richard lewis is a respectable family man whike Michael Joseph is an unstable cheater who violates and abuses women.
Whike Michael Joseph seeks to divide the the cinstituency in blue and red, Richard Lewis sees a constituent.
When Richard Lewis distributes food packages and school supplies in the constituency he doesn’t ask which oarty anyone supports.
So tell me why there should be a close race.
Are people voting simply on politicl lines?
I refuse to believe that Rural West is so uneducated.
Richard lewis has been tried, tested and proven.
His track record earns him another and another and another term are representative.
Michael Joseph on the other hand is simply seeking to be part of a corrupt, greedy, unpatriotic, narcissistic and evil gang who use political office to feather their beds.
So on elections day it will be, “Richard Lewis, Richard Lewis, Richard Lewis, Richard Lewis, Richard Lewis, Richard Lewis………………..Richard Lewis, Richard Lewis and Richard Lewis.”
