The political landscape in Antigua and Barbuda has recently been marked by dramatic shifts within the United Progressive Party (UPP).

like the walls of Jericho that crumbled at the sound of trumpets, or the Tower of Babel whose lofty ambitions faltered due to disunity, the UPP’s once-unified structure appears to be crumbling from within, with resignations and defections that are reshaping the political contours of the nation.

In recent months, the UPP has faced significant internal upheaval as several prominent members of the party have stepped down, raising questions about the stability and future of the opposition.

The resignations have become a focal point in the country’s political discourse, especially as some members have found themselves drawn to the allure of the current government, signaling a potential shift in allegiances.

A House Divided

The UPP, once a stalwart of the political scene in Antigua and Barbuda, has been beset by discord. The resignation of high-profile members has shaken the party’s foundations.

These departures have been interpreted by many as a symptom of deeper discontent within the party, which has struggled to present a unified front.

Members of the UPP, many of whom have long been seen as loyal to the party’s cause, have voiced frustration over internal power struggles, leadership challenges, and the direction of the party itself.

Like the Tower of Babel, where communication broke down and the builders were scattered, the UPP’s internal divisions have led to a scattering of its most vocal supporters.

The resignations have not only weakened the party’s leadership structure but have also dampened the enthusiasm of its supporters. As the party’s ranks continue to thin, questions arise about its ability to recover and present a coherent alternative to the ruling government.

Joining the Current Government

Perhaps the most striking aspect of the recent political exodus from the UPP has been the number of former party members who have chosen to join the ranks of the current government. This shift has added fuel to the fire of political speculation, as some observers argue that the UPP’s decline is directly linked to a growing sense of disenchantment with the party’s leadership and policies.

The defections have not been without consequence. As prominent figures from the UPP make their way to the government side, it raises critical questions about the party’s relevance and its ability to retain support.

What once seemed like a clear political divide between the opposition and the ruling party is now increasingly blurred, as former UPP members become key players in the current administration and its’ mission of national development.

This exodus signals a broader trend in Caribbean politics, where party loyalty often fades in favor of personal ambition or a desire to align with the perceived winners.

The political allegiance of some former UPP members has not only weakened the opposition but has also bolstered the government’s legitimacy, adding a new layer of complexity to the political battle.

The Crumbling Foundations: What Lies Ahead?

As the UPP crumbles under the weight of its internal strife, the party faces a challenging future.

The resignations and defections that have rocked the party suggest a deep fracture that will take time to heal. It is now clear in everyone’s mind that the UPP is incapable, unable to heal or mount a formidable challenge to a surging ABLP.

Much like the fall of Jericho or the scattering of those who sought to build the Tower of Babel, the UPP’s unraveling serves as a cautionary tale about the fragility of political unity. A party built on fractured alliances, power struggles, and disillusionment is unlikely to stand the test of time.

The ABLP is undoubtedly the foundation of Antigua and Barbuda’s politics, and this recent dynamic is a clear reflection of its dominance, service levels and ultimately its attractiveness to the People of Antigua and Barbuda.

  1. Chaku Waku is a force to be reckoned with. UPP star player. He was honored at UPP independence banquet just 2 weeks ago.

Pringle is branded the LITTLE BLACK BOY

    Gisele is the HEAD

  2. “As prominent figures from the UPP make their way to the government side, it raises critical questions about the party’s relevance and its ability to retain support.”

Chet, no need to be so complex.

The UPP is not the UPP of before. The love is gone. The respect is gone. The one standard for all is gone. Competent leadership has been on a “progressive” slide down to hell.

Weak men – Harold Lovell – empowered the One God of the UPP – Gisele Isaac, for whom no rules apply. Now she has fully captured the Pringle Puppet and surrounded herself with eunuchs, like Kim Jong Un of North Korea. They even award themselves for nothing, like failed state dictator and company.

There is therefore now no discipline, no standards, and consequently no unity. They attack and undermine their own candidates. They flush any prospect of victory down the crapper.

You kiss the “Chaos Daemon’s” rear, you’re golden.

You call for respect and adherence to the party constitution, and for the same rules to apply to all… you are hammered down. That, or you do the only rational thing… leave the Puppet and his puppet masters to their inevitable demise.

    It’s really not that complicated.

Ordinary UPP supporters who look on at the death spiral will cling to hope. This does not make them dunce. The true believers in any organization are always the last to realize that unaddressed problems are fatal.

We read the comments of delusional supporters on this very news site every day. They cry “stronger than ever”, when barely a hundred people came to the UPP mega rally in All Saints, and while even fewer listen to the party radio station.

On the other side, you have a Prime Minster that is rapidly moving to fix things and progress the country in the post COVID period.

Those will clear eyes and self-respect will not tarry on Gisele Isaac’s sinking ship of disrespect, denigration, cannibalization and inevitable defeat.

  3. Come on!!! Even the most ardent and vociferous ABLP supporter wouldn’t expected Chet Greene to say or speak kindly of their main opposition the UPP.

I read what he said with quite some mirth and hilarity, because all that he opined was somewhat predictable and unsurprising.

Look fellow Antiguans, the only reason I can find for Chet Greene nosing around in ah UPP business, is because he’s appealing to his ABLP members for the foreseeable push when he eventually goes for the leadership collision against the declining misfortunes of Gaston Browne.

Chet Greene also wants to see Antigua & Barbuda move to a one-party state as well as the current weak leader.

However, I could be right 😁

  4. The article exaggerates the significance of resignations within the UPP, framing them as evidence of total collapse. Resignations are not uncommon in political organizations and often reflect individual circumstances rather than systemic failure.

  5. Declaring the UPP incapable of mounting a challenge is premature and overlooks the dynamic nature of political landscapes. Parties have rebounded from worse situations, especially when public discontent with incumbents grows.

  6. When any organization’s is going through what the UNITED PROGRESSIVE PARTY is going through, there will always be comments, introspection and criticisms of its leaders. Given that it is a political party, there will be the quite legitimate question as to its ability to govern our country as it is literally the government in waiting. This period should be used to prepare for assuming the reigns of leadership of the country. Instead the party appears to be mired internal battles. There is still time on the calender before the next elections but the clock is ticking.

  7. Media houses should let politicians pay for these articles and not be too quick to publish them. I have it on good authority that Chet hates ANR and is in bed with another news portal, yet he sends his hogwash here. ANR, stop being used, Let them PAY. This goes for the ABLP and the UPP.

  8. Chet grow some balls and stop hiding under Gaston’s kilt and challenge him for the Party’s leadership, if you’re man enough.
Can the Nation get a report and an update on Antigua Airways, the Africans drowning being smuggled out of Antigua and how you allowed Air Peace negotiators Sri scamm you on the LIAT 2020 deal?
