LETTER: Social Security need to offer a better service

10

Dear Editor,

As we begin a new year I am hoping that some of the Gov’t establishments & statutory boards offer better services to its patrons for the new year.

Social Security is one such establishment that I have serious concerns with.

First, I am not clear as to why provisions are not made for us the pensioners, to be sheltered from the elements of the weather, while we wait on a clerk to approve that we are still alive. Instead we are left out in the hot sun or perhaps the rain until they are ready for us.

Considering our age and the fragility of our body processes, I am left to wonder why SS cannot extend the courtesy of placing a water fountain with hot & cold water to provide us the privilege to make a hot cup of tea or have something to drink, in the event that it is needed.. In addition, a toilet facility should also be in place to accommodate us in the event that any one has to obey nature when it calls. The staff need to bear in mind that the bodies of the elderly are not as resilient as those of the younger ones.

Now, the time taken to service the pensioner’s application, as well as the maternity & the sickness application is totally ludicrous.  Taking severaI months to over a year to render an application is ridiculous. Someone at Social Security has to be joking.

The operations at SS needs overhauling. It baffles me as to why an application take so long to be honoured? Is it a case that the staff who works on these applications are incompetant or is it that Social Security is short staff? Whatever the issue is, it needs to be rectified immediately.

Some of us who are new pensioners applied for our pension over a year ago & to this date we have not received a dime yet, neither can anyone tell us when our pension will be ready.

It is grossly unfair!! If it were not for a few savings or the help from family members, then the dog on the road would be better off than us.  Many of us do not have any other source of income. So how are we to survive without an income? We need to eat, drink & live a life like anyone of those persons employed at SS.

I am asking the authorities to look in to this matter. When we were employed, every week or month, monies were taken from our wages to submit to SS and now we are suppose to be beneficiaries some of us are catching hells.

Alex ( Pensioner )

  1. Poor man

Don’t let tenman, PETE, GILES, coming down read this because they will say you are lying that Antigua is the best place on earth and owned by Gaston Brown

  2. Ridiculously sad….the cry is loud and the wait is unbearable…the bills doesn’t stop…the hungry belly don’t pause…and the banks have no conscience!
No communication during the year plus wait for new pensioners….I can only hope that custom’s 400 million plus the 2% will ease the hardship on our elderly and pensioners.
Only who feels it knows it.

  3. Fu real Alex? Over a year for a pension to be process? Dat one hard fu swallow…… If a true, somebody is more than making joke.

Sometime ago, didn’t a government minister lambaste the hierarchy at Social Security for the ineffectiveness of their operations?

  4. Man I feel your pain in accessing services and due entitlement: but I recently on the radio the Big Cajones blabbing on about his compassionate mantra agenda of caring for the most vulnerable members of society, and thinking it might have included you.Vested. entitlements must be seamlessly accessible upon request of it’s membership with all entry forms to be completed and funds disbursed within a calendar month of submissions. Accommodations to include toilet facilities, sitting arrangements shaded from the elements area, and potable water is deem mandatory in all public buildings that cater government services: and especially to places such Social Security that cater to the elderly, and the physically challenged among the population. It is disheartening to read the complaint of the elderly whom I must believe did forfeit compulsory contribution to make the scheme function; to now be made to experience the feeling of dismay at their time of need “and” devoid of partisan political affiliation. This should be the mantra of Governance by the people, for the people.

  5. Let’s not forget that UPP referred to the pensioners as Rag Tags so it seems that the elderly are not given the respect that they should.

    • @ Bluddy Bloke

You sound like a bluddy joke. You make no sense whatsoever. I guess the UPP has been in power for the last 10 years. You are so stupid, highlighting the failings of your INCONSIDERATE LABOUR PARTY.

  6. Not good. Then again, nothing works here in this failed state. Historically, government workers at places where customer service is required, are usually the worst. There doesn’t seem to be anything in place to constantly moniter and access these workers to ensure that service/processing times for the various benefits are met.
Mathias is a total waste of time and should have been fired a long time ago. Isn’t there a pensioner’s association? Whoever is on charge of that should be removed forthwith.
What a backward place this is! One day, God’s willing, many of us will have to deal with this incompetence.
There may be intrinsic problems with payouts folks because ALP stole over a half a billion dollars of poor people’s money. SS is in need of a large cash interjection or these problems will persist.

  7. Don’t you see they are busy paying that mortgage for those flop bankrupt buildings on friars hill road for those white and foreign comrade whom our government is saving by sending all government offices and banks they have influence over to go occupy those failed bankrupt friars hill road project. But just like how they extracted wealth from black people during slavery, they extracting our tax money from the treasury for these white people.
