LETTER: Save Our Souls! HELP!!

6

Dear Editor,

I am appealing to the GOVERNMENT to intervene NOW!

Who thrive in what we call “Tourism”?

The hotel owners, managers and the union bodies that take the last bit of change from our pockets and still can’t even fight for the REAL workers…

A simple restaurant/cookshop can pay staff at-least $100 daily.. and even the largest hotel company on island (ELITE ISLAND RESORT) pays a mere $9.50 per hour to EVERYONE ACROSS THE BOARD!(with the exception of supervisors and managers).

After an 8 hour shift, you go home with $76ECD and deductions have to be taken from that… How can it make sense? Then there’s this “SERVICE CHARGE” that is always excessively low even at CHRISTMAS when the rates are ever so high… The daily rates have doubled and tripled, the amount of persons has also doubled and still the service charge is yet the same…

The government need to get auditors to honestly go into these hotels and check every nook and cranny to find all breaches of payment not just to the staff and what they’re owed but also taxes that have been deviated from the people of Antigua and Barbuda…

It’s ever so weird that the owners find themselves in the accounts department when payroll is being conducted…

The government needs to put a special minimum wage when it comes to this hotel industry because the extortion is above and beyond on the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

This is a cry and a plea for help.. SAVE OUR SOULS! MAJORITY OF OUR MERE EARNINGS LEGIT GO BACK INTO TRAVELLING EXPENSES JUST TO GET TO “HELL”!

THE GOVERNMENT MUST ACT NOW AND SWIFTLY TO STOP THIS INJUSTICE… PLEASE!!

MR GASTON BROWNE, MR MAX FERNANDEZ ACT NOW PLEASE!!

  1. Tourism is our main industry the hotel workers should be paid well , not just the managers and the government. Each endeavouring all should be achieving not some

  3. As much as i agree with this person question is does the government care at this point am not a political person am just talking in general…… that man GB do not care we could all die and he still will not care some people are just built to not care… go figure

  4. THIS IS HIGHWAY ROBBERY.
$9.50 PER HOUR,TIMES 8 HRS WORKED EQUALS $76 FOR EACH DAY WORKED.OVER 5 DAYS YOUR GROSS PAY WOULD BE $380 PER WEEK.IS THAT FOR REAL OR IT IS A JOKE.WHAT THE HELL COULD $380 PER WEEK BUY IN ANTIGUA?I WENT TO A SUPERMARKET AND HAD A LOOK AROUND AT THE PRICES.A CONTANER OF ICE CREAM SOLD HERE FOR US$3.00 COST EC $40.00 IN ANTIGUA.

  5. The Caribbean hotel owners have replaced the owners of the plantations and operate them just like in the colonial days. The money paid abroad into their accounts and a minimum is sent to the islands to take care of operational expenses which include ‘neaga’ wages just like before. Our politicians trade with them in taxes for benefits for their friends and family, in exchange the planter class now the hotel class just operate on low wages, minimal staff overworked, just like on the plantation.
Nothing has really changed! We even love them as we loved Massa, and report each other to Massa when anyone steps out of line. Tourism is truly whorism!
