Dear Editor
It would be remiss of me not to wish Paul Quinn, our well loved radio host, a speedy recovery coupled with God’s guidance & His richest blessings. Sickness & death do not discriminate. Either one may come knocking on our door at anytime and when we least expect it.
At this sametime, I am also empathizing with Paul’s family concerning the pressures that they are presently enduring in order to get their love one back on the road of recovery. Interestingly, I have had my personal experience of having a love one in a similar position, so I do understand what they are faced with.
Paul is an Antiguan and inspite of his political persuasion, he is a human being who deserves whatever help he can get from whoever, now that he’s in distress.
Now, with that been said, I was amazed to hear a report on air of the immediate response and help the family got from the govt, who was instrumental in flying in a specialist surgeon from Trinidad to deal with Paul’s situation, thus causing his sister to openly extend on air, gratitude from their family. Instantly it rose a flag of concern.
Certainly, I must say thumbs up to the govt to extend such profound courtesies and also to Paul’s sister for reciprocating to the Govt, the family’s gratitude. The govt is not only for the RED but they are also a govt for the BLUE, the GREEN and the ORANGE. However, I am left to wonder if such ” swift & quality help ” offered by the Gov’t, is only extended to a certain class of persons in our society.
Furthermore, I am forced to ask if there is a different criteria set out for the ordinary and common person compared with the criteria set out for the prominent person in our society, for getting such courtesies extended from the govt?
Several months ago, I can recall reading an article about a young lady who was PLEADING for assistance from the Govt concerning her state of affairs of alledgely ending up paralyzed from a delivery of her baby.
In addition, there was another case where overseas help was needed for a patient who had allegedly developed complications from a surgery done locally and the said patient was left on their own to incur all expenses for the medical attention they needed. To this day, the patient got no financial or moral support from the Gov’t or MBS. Sad!
Now, if we consider ourselves as an Economic Powerhouse, the govt needs to be very mindful that the products and services that they offer to its citizens & residents should be offered to everyone equally across the board and not to only just for a selective few.

Alex, for the very first time I have agreed with anything you have written, I am an ardent listener of Observer Radio so I am glad the Gov’t took this action, but it should be done equally for all, hope you will be more balanced in your writings from now on
Poor people will always suffer regardless which administration is in power because if you are not a friend or companion of those who sits in the high offices then the dogs are much better off than you.
Sorry that I can’t say fair Antigua like the anthem says. It’s a sick country when healthcare becomes political. A head injury or a brain bleed should not be an automatic death sentence for every Antiguan and Barbuda. I work at Holberton in the eighties. We had access to a Neurosurgeon out of Barbados. His name is Dr. Clark. He would be here more timely that this Neurosurgeon who came in from Trinidad to see Paul.
Paul is an Antiguan and irrespective his political persuasion deserves the best health care; and so were the patients at SLMBC who died from head injuries. The Government is not deserving of praise for helping Paul. You telling me that healthcare in Antigua and Barbuda has not advanced, or in some instances gotten worst than it was in the eighties? Shame, shame, shame!!
What I need Jackie Quinn to do is to start a daily countdown on the Ministry of Health absence of a relationship with a Neurosurgeon who ideally should be home based or get here timely to work on Paul Quinn, Andre Simon and others. The Government has failed big time in healthcare. I know this. I worked Holberton and now have some 48 years of experience under my belt.
She needs to start a countdown on the # of days passed since she had her treatment paid for by TAXPAYERS without anyone knowing the total amount $$$$$

A well written article.
The facts are facts. It is only those in the kitchen will always feel the heat.
well didn’t the RAG-TAG Clown get PLENTY MONEY FROM MEDICAL BENEFITS FOR BREAST CANCER TREATMENT AT AN ELITE HOSPITAL IN THE U.S.????? Come een like your lastname have to be Quinn to get “ten to” in this place eh?
Meanwhile the average “unknown” person has to resort to their own fundraising, BBQ, Fish Fry, Sponsorhsip sheet etc etc
Wah can go so???? How much money from MBS was spent on the bubby cancer treatment? Why can’t TAXPAYERS know under the Freedom of Information Act? Never once the survivor used the mic to advocate for payement of treatment for other cancer patients. Seems like it’s “ALL OF SELF AND NONE OF THEE” All for you and none for me…..so Ostinate sing and say entitt?
Here is an idea. The Islands need to get together and employ a Neurosurgeon to work across the OECS.Where ever his/her services are needed they would go.It is just my idea,so build on it. The Government money belongs to the people. All should be treated the same, regardless of the person status in Antigua and Barbuda.
@ Truth B Told. What a vile sounding person you are. I hope to God you are not a woman. I will bet, that the person that you are trying to demean, is…. Let me leave that alone. Are you an Antiguan? So full of hate for your own people? Or is it jealousy? I am sure that the Quinn family has more friends here than you, on either side of the divide. Stuuupz. Speedy recovery to Paul
So many friends but none to chip in and prevent taking a bite out of MBS TAXPAYERS $$$$???
With “friends” like those, who need enemies???
Look…I am not red nor blue but I am in the know.
Every effort is made to help any one with neurosurgical needs at slbmc.
Some cases require more immediate attention based on the time-sensitive nature of the Medical Diagnosis
Let’s stop trying to belittle the efforts of people who work hard (internally and externally) and have studied dilligently and who ALWAYS try to be fair and fearless in pursuing excellence at slbmc
