Dear Editor
Please publish the following article in your well-loved and widely-read online paper. Thanks
I agree that the UPP needs to treat its membership with more respect. Politics is about addition, not pushing people away.
However, I don’t understand what talents Fitzroy is talking about that were so valuable that the ALP inherited when the defectors left the UPP.
Let’s look at the principal defectors: Lamin? His skills, please? Colin?
A good radio host. Give him that. But very deceitful. UPP says good riddance. Winston? Cocky, spoiled by Baldwin Spencer and created so much havoc with the fencing scandal where he let all the money go to his now comrades.
The Pig Meat? Bitter as gall because she was a woman scorned. Chaneel? Spoiled, rude, full of herself and felt she was entitled.
Dwayne? Can’t speak, back-stabber, knows nothing about finance. Trevor Young? Poor Trevor. They milked him dry about every grievance he had with UPP, then cut him off. A little job here, then oblivion.
And now Smith. He is in agriculture. He got a ministry.
What does he know about agriculture to be there? Lands? Of course, his job will be to be the front man to take Barbuda people land for Gaston Browne. Don’t envy him. He will have sleepless nights delivering that.
So can we agree on a few of the reasons why the defectors have been embraced by Gaston Browne (notice I did not say the Labourites)?
Their political and financial value to Gaston Browne.
Let’s start with Smith. We all know the story by now.
Why did Gaston Browne court him? The main reason is to provide breathing space for the anxiety caused by Robin’s illness. Another reason. To replace Gaston Browne’s wife Maria when the war starts with the Barbudans about their land.
Same thing about getting a cushion seat can be said about Dwayne George, but he did not get and does not have a seat. He is expendable, and will be soon.
The others, the ones who surround Gaston Browne on a Saturday afternoon. Their duties and skills set? To tell Gaston Browne even if he is going out in the street naked, how fine his clothes look. And to continually cuss the UPP and heap a lot of coals on their head, with passion and with vigour. Whether truth or lies.
To maintain their focus, he is willing to give them monetary gifts, etc, out of the nation’s treasury. So it does not cost him a thing.
Concerning what’s going on in the UPP, that is like a lodge and even Fitzroy does not really know what is happening, especially with the leadership.
Gisele is not under any political pressure to step down. The members, especially the men, are afraid of her. She will stay there and singlehandedly destroy the party. Pringle? Well, Pringle does what Gisele tells him to.
Bowen is two-face. He is waiting patiently for Pringle to crash so he can take over. He does not know much about the workings of the UPP, nor does he care to know.
He just keeps his head down, betrays who he wants to and suck up to who he wants to. He is a dangerous floater. Chances are he will be going back home as soon as the mission he’s on is accomplished.
The immature and inexperienced MP has now entered the Labour bosom. The others seem adrift. They just don’t know how to handle all the treachery and the lack of support from those up top.
Shawn has achieved her two house spots and one, so she has her full pension. If the party retrogressed while she was there, then whose fault is it? Mary Clare Hurst she is not. Too lazy for for the role of a true GS, or as Trevor Young called her, Mama Lazy.
The Labourites have to feel suffocated. Didn’t the leader tell them that the just comes were the bottom of the UPP barrel? How come they are at the top of the food chain in ALP? What does that say about ALP’s capabilities?
One last word, if Lovell comes back, the membership of the party must forbid him from just going out and taking any and everybody to run. To save the party, that must not be his job. He sucks at it. Look at his record.
But should he come back? Well, who else they have?

CHITTERY, CHITTERY, CHITTERY, pretending to speak like a UPP supporter but cannot fool anyone.
Its a pity that people like you are so stupid that you think so lowly of us who are not as dumb as you ass-lickers in ABLP.
HAROLD LOVELL is a SPENT FORCE. He lost the most elections in the entire Caribbean. UPP IS totally DISMANTLED.
Yes, let Lovell be the candidate for All Saints West.
Then ABLP can count one seat in the bag.
Lovell is a political failure…. His track record speak for itself
The problem that upp is facing now is that people are not patient enough and don’t like to associate with losers. The upp team and the supporters have to rally and trust each other in this new journey of the party. Team upp need a high level of gratitude and diplomacy towards the political process. Crossing the floor is expected in human space of politics. What counts the most is loyalty to the electorate. calm down and reflect the answers are with in your team.
Well said Mikey B. Articulate and we’ll put together… you can pick out everyone who is unable interpret your message.
I watched SERPENT and SHUGY on the KNIGHT at NIGHTS show. These two members of Parliament seem very confused and DO NOT know what is going within the UPP camp. I heard Serpent uttered that He wish Lovell will return to be the Leader of UPP. They are having lots of problems within. No political party can win election in this situation.
When you have to come up against Gaston Browne ( best in the political game ) you must be on your A PLUS game. I do not see that within UPP at this moment.
UPP at this moment still does not have CARETAKERS in four Constituencies. Gaston Browne will call snap election and take all 17 seats. UPP is a very sad political party. What a pity.
from my interactions with this man, he was very arrogant. he and di rest UPP man like deh frighten for woman, di black one from Swetes, di goat balls one from Bolans and di Snake.
When we end up taking a shortcut to do something and it fails, we often admit in our hearts, sometimes to other people, that had we shown more patience, given more impartial thought to it, discarded the personal bias, and been less hasty in our decision-making, we would have achieved the right result., which is the one we wanted in the first place.
This is what happened to the UPP at its Convention in 2019, and again repeated last April.
It would appear that the UPP is a very emotive party. It seems to lack the ability to keep personal feelings out of making decisions to advance its chances for achieving governance. At the risk of sounding misogynistic, it would appear that the party has developed a fairer sex leaning which does not have the appetite for hard politics, and is more comfortable tackling issues which could be handled by many non-governmental organizations of the day.
Even more, the UPP seems to lack the leadership which would make the unemotional decisions on who could and should take the fight to the opposition, and so provide the type of leadership that its members could coalesce around.
Talking to some male acquaintances in and around the fringes of the party, there seems to be a sort of fatalistic resignation of ‘it is what it is”, and that there is a cat to be belled, and that the few bold ratta who dared to raise their paws to do this have had these lopped off.
And so the UPP needs someone to bell the cat. Time is running out.
