LETTER: My experience at the hospital

10

Dear Editor,

I recently had a baby who had to be admitted to the NICU, my baby stayed about 6 weeks and I must say for most part I had a wonderful experience.

They’re a few young nurses in there I believe their new and when I say these nurses are so kind and polite.

From the time they open that door a few of them always have a big smile on their faces and greet me warmly.

However the main reason why am writing this is because I have seen another side to this place.

One day one of the new nurses were working with 2 other nurses, I recognized one of them from Holberton days.

The new nurse had my baby that day and I asked her a question and she politely said am not sure but I will ask the senior nurse, she went and ask the question and I heard that same nurse in the glasses answered her in a rough tone and said ” wa she need for know all that for, she pickney sick”.

Anyway the new nurse came back to me and said I will inform the doctor and let her know you need an update.

Shortly after I saw the new nurse went in the kitchen to start preparing the baby foods, as soon as the nurse went into the kitchen the same nurse that’s suppose to be senior started degrading the nurse and at the time I was not the only parent in there.

She started saying the nurse dunce and she don’t know why they send them to work in the NICU and she went on.

This was actually the first time I have witnessed this, but as the weeks gone by it continued.

Sometimes when some of these senior nurses (that’s what they called the experience nurses) are working you can feel the tension because the new nurses just try to keep out of their way and not do anything to make them upset.

Honestly I think this needs to be addressed by bigger heads in the hospital.

We have alot of piggish nurses and we don’t want the new ones to inherited this behavior. This is why we have this problem now because the long time nurses not setting any example for the new ones.

I really hope these new nurses in the  NICU do not fall into this behavior.

Another mother wanted us to make a report but honestly we didn’t know who to report it too, so am making this public with hopes of higher ranks in the hospital seeing this.

I don’t believe in bullying and this was so distasteful and I hope something is being done about this.

  1. On this news portal, I have read many persons echoing the sentiment that SLBMC has the potential of being one of the better hospital in the Eastern Caribbean but some simple systems need to be put in place so that the hospital can efficient.
Proper accountability of the doctors’ & nurses’ stewardship & an outlet for patients’ concerns, mishaps etc should be implemented. The 24 to 30 hr work shift for the doctors is archaic and should be sseriously looked at….. It burns out the doctors and place them in position to be subjected to errors

  2. The older nurses probably feels threatened by the younger ones.
That I don’t understand cause you have experience on your side..
    Why you feel threatened?
    And insecure?
She’s not there to take your job, but to learn from you..
    Be nice, nurses your temperament
And demeanor are being watched by the newbie!!
Why some of these nurses act so piggish and disagreable?
    Geeez!!

  3. That sort of bullying has been going on for years. It’s not only from senior staff to junior staff..but also from those trained in canada, usa, uk, and jamaica towards those trained in mexico, guyana and cuba.

  4. This country is going through too many changes and the diversity of peoples in Antigua has eroded the original culture of care and compassion. This is reflected in how the different strata behave towards the very local blacks, the Spanish speaking, the white, the arab, the Chinese and the regional people.
You can be sure those with money and status are treated differently.

    • Very much so. I went there once accompany a friend who was feeling dizzy and headache and they stigmatized everything about us because we are not from here and was told if we did came in an ambulance then the treatment would’ve been better. And aru non nationals need to wait and we sit there for hours until a white man comes in and he was rush away immediately. Bullying and racism is biggest problem there.

    • There is so much truth to this statement right here. No love in their hearts, fight down and jealousy. Antiguan women are their own worse enemy.

      • Not denying i work with them for years and saw it but they will say they trained for this amount of years and have license but to me some are only in it for money and power they are no longer the patient advocate…

  5. I do not wish to excuse any incidents of bad behavior by any specific persons in the workplace, but I really hate when negative generalizations are made about people without sufficient supporting evidence. I have had many bad customer service experiences in Antigua by both young and old workers in addition to some good experiences. But, regarding nurses, I have personally never experienced any “piggish” behaviour at the hospital in maternity or at any other time. I have also never seen any negative interactions between hospital staff regardless of age. So, while I might believe other people’s accounts of specific instances, I do not believe that it is fair to make generalization in the media that encourage the public to hate on particular individuals or groups of people. There are also many sides to a story. How do we know that the question asked by the patient was even reasonable. Perhaps, the answer was obvious and the nurse was irritated by the intrusion into her duties. Not sure this is worth a letter to the media to stir up hatred between age groups.

  6. Last year I had my baby at 6 months pregnant. They gave me drips and told me it’s to ease the pain. They too damn wicked. No lie
