Dear Editor,
I recently got into an accident. I was travelling from east to west on one of our popular main roads in Antigua and out of nowhere I saw a car speeding towards me. CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHATS APP GROUP
Instinct told me to veer away in order to save my life, had I not done that I would be dead for today.
The car ended up flipping with me multiple times and the vehicle that would’ve caused me to end up this position disappeared.
I managed to call for help and ended up at the Mount Saint John Medical Center at around 4 am on the same morning.
I was placed flat on my back with a neck brace to keep my neck in position.
I managed to fracture a vertebra in my spine and one in my neck.
The situation was dire but I remained calm and in the same position for well over twelve hours.
I was told that the orthopedic doctors are on call and was asked to wait.
I saw a doctor at around 10 am, he left, told me he would review my scans and come back with a plan of action.
This took nearly 4 hours.
He came back to tell me he needed to do another scan to see what was really going on, but by this time my body was already swollen, so he came back and said we will admit you, allow the swelling to go down and then we will scan you again for a more accurate diagnosis.
Of course I was not able to eat and I had already been on the drip since I came in. They asked my mother to purchase a neck brace for me, as they had none to give.
This struck me as strange because how is it a case where you have no neck brace to offer. Wouldn’t this be considered the least?
I pay my taxes, I am an Antiguan Citizen and I do have a Medical Benefits Card. How does the card benefit me, if not even a simple neck brace could be offered.
My experience over the night was harrowing. I barely slept a wink, my pain was excruciating but I bore the pain hoping that by the morning, the doctors would start assisting me with my healing process.
The next day came, and by mid morning, I was told that they could not do anything to help me and that they would have to send me home.
I was like send me home? No assistance, no screws, not even a list on how to look after myself after being injured so badly. I was told I would be discharged and given some pain killers to assist me.
The pain killers I received were drugs you could buy over the counter. When has paracetamol ever worked for serious pain like the one I was feeling?
I don’t know where to begin, I am still in shock. Does the public know that our only hospital does not have the means to support physically damaged folk? Which hospital in the world just throws you out after something so tragic?
My car was totaled, literally flattened with me inside, yet still I was discharged and given the least like I mean nothing.
I am extremely lost, I don’t know what to do or who to ask for help but rest assured, once I am a little better I will be taking action.
Too often do you hear of the horrors stories occurring at Mount Saint John, and because it does not affect you directly you take it lightly.
I am now one of those people who have a horror story to share.
I hope the powers that be are working to fix things, because too many of us have had to die, or go through torrential experiences at the hands of the doctors and nurses at this medical institution.
Sincerely, Broken

@ Antiguans put politics inna everything
Shut up as you are the one involving it. A JUS SHAME R U SHAME A R U PARTY AND GOVERNMENT AND THE AWFUL STATE OF AFFAIRS IN THIS COUNTRY.
Y’ALL DO NOT HAVE NO SHAME NOR DECENCY.
Your level of illiteracy is questionable. This individual is speaking about their horrible experience at the ONLY health care facility in the county and you’re over here quacking about they’re talking about politics. Who else are we supposed to question? Had you been in the same situation you would have been singing a different song. This is the sme health care provider that has to take care of you and your loved ones god forbid something happens to you or them. You would have been all over social media rolling for attention if you were fitting in this person’s shoe. It’s a shame to see people as ignorant to the situation as you trying to blame an individual for experiencing a near death situation only to get turned down.
I whispered a quick, silent, prayer for a full recovery for you..
The health care system in antigua is atrocious..
Molwyn? Really!!!
Unbelievable.. 🙏🏽
Truly a horrible experience. Antigua has hit rock bottom. Driving 25 minutes into town is like seriously dangerous. The roads are worse than ever before. I silently say a prayer when ever I get in a car here. God forbid we end up in MSJMC, you could die because it’s a hospital in name only. How can anyone praise this government. What have they done to Antigua and it’s citizens.
“I pay my taxes, I am an Antiguan Citizen and I do have a Medical Benefits Card. How does the card benefit me, if not even a simple neck brace could be offered.”
I got into an accident recently as well and was told by the receptionist to that called about my BILL that Medical Benefits does not cover motor vehicle accidents.
Wah could ah cause diss?!
MBS please clarify the statement that ‘MBS don’t cover injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents’.
If this is true, likely need to include a one off personal vehicle injury insurance as part of third party insurance. (Driver & passengers).
Oh my tears filled my eyes after hearing your story.I hope u get help quickly so u can get out those horrific pains that you are in.
Get well soon my brother.another one have to suffer .
I hope you got attention privately, since our lone hospital could not help you
Soooo sad
ANTIGUANS …….NEED TO STOP PAYING MB & SS Periodtttt
BOTH OF THEM IS A SCAM
I thank GOD you’re alive and eventually your body will heal
Idnt inow yyyyy on gods earth Antiguans pay these USELESS BODIES
What is sad is that the people who can change this are those who have Molwyn or Gaston on speed dial as did Troy Allen.
They get medical attention when they call their Minister, others are left to die.
The reality is, until there is change at the ballot box; then live suffer or die with it.
