LETTER: Man walks into NICU and threatens life of nurses and others

Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre

I am writing about this incident that happened in the NICU that was very disturbing for my daughter and I. I went to visit my grandchild in the NiCU along with my daughter Thursday afternoon.

When I arrived everything was quite until a tall rasta man entered the ward assuming he was a parent and he had a strong smell of weed.

He then took chair and went on the ward then shortly after I heard, nurse nurse, so a nurse quickly ran to him and was assisting him with the baby while another nurse also ran to bedside to see what was happening.

While the nurses were assisting with the baby he kicked a trash bin and the bin hit the nurse foot, he then pushed a Machine that his baby was connected too, he angrily walked away then kicked 2 more trash bins cause another parent to jump out of fear while holding her baby. He then started shouting threats saying he’s going to shoot up the ward and kill the nurses.

One of the nurse told him to please go outside if he can’t calm down, he then gave more threats and stormed off the ward. A few minutes later he then return on the ward and was watching the nurses with a threatening look.

The nurses went into an office on the ward then I saw a lady walked out and my daughter told me that was the Manger. I asked her so if that is the manager how come she never came out of the office when those threats were made close to her office cause all of us heard it.

The so called manager took the father in her office and looked the door, he then came out still angry and knock one of the nurses table and the table touched the nurse on her side.

All the parents witnessed this ordeal. So now I asked myself ,are our loved ones and nurses safety taken serious at the hospital. What if that man did go for a gun we would be saying RIP. The nurses and parents were visible shaken after that so why did the Manger allowed him to come back on the ward without police being called?

The nurse had to be apologizing for his behavior not even the Manger came and said anything to any of us. I am very upset about what I witnessed and my daughter speaks so highly of these nurses in the NICU and she was also in fear for the nurses.

I hope management of hospital sees this and that manager needs to be questioned because that situation was serious and the fact that she was in the office and didn’t come out speaks volume. Some changes needs to be made at the hospital.

  1. I get your concerns but what made you think he was a “Rasta” was it the look or the smell of whatever you call weed?
What would describe him as if he was dressed in suit shirt and tie with a bald head and smelled like roses, a bullpooper?

  2. Sir, that’s what obtains in this SHITHOLE COUNTRY you witnessed at the at NICU, but it’s part of daily life in WADADLI, we need a total reset. I bet you nothing will be done to this person, not even a warning

  3. @ Locks Don’t Make You Rasta
That is very true but some people who definitely identify as Rasta behave in like manner too whether you admit it or not. Some people identify as Christian and they do wrong things. No one is perfect, unless you think Rastas are

  4. Why do people like this author write about ALLEGED incidents like this to a news site?

“I hope management of hospital sees this and that manager needs to be questioned because that situation was serious and the fact that she was in the office and didn’t come out speaks volume. Some changes needs to be made at the hospital.”

Author: Why haven’t YOU contacted the management at the hospital (instead of hoping that they “see this”) or contacted the police at the moment the person you described allegedly made violent threats (instead of this news site) like a normal person would have?

  5. The world is certainly a different place nowadays and we can no longer just take our safety and security and that of others for granted. Even in hospitals things can happen and this incident might be a wake up call to beef up the security within the hospital and elsewhere.

  6. @Capone understand this, personally I don’t see or view anything, not even a before initially with my eyes. I see with my gut feelings/heart so that I can understand the essence of what is before me. Science and medical professionals classify individuals like myself as, those blessed with SYNISTHESIA, meaning that, we comprehend the Essence of nature through more than just the five classified senses.
As for thinking Rastas are perfect, I couldn’t be that psycho. Yes they do have some learned behaviors which are positive in nature; but please do understand this, not even Nature is perfect because of it was, it would not be as destructive, cyclic, healing, repetitive and it would implode with no room for improvement.

Capone thought he was the perfect gangster until some lit his ass up with bullets.
    Perfection is a myth.

  7. After he threatened their lives he was allowed to return to the ward. This is why people are leaving healthcare. There is no respect from patients and family members. The hospital is one of the only places an individual feels comfortable pulling a threat and just returning like it’s nothing.

  8. I hope this incident does not discourage these young nurses from continuing in the profession, especially those two nurses ,who demonstrates great empathy and cares for the babies as though they were their own.

  9. @ Audley Phillip and Healthcare worker,

In most law abiding countries the police would have been called immediately.
No one seems to know what triggered this person. But the police immediate response and the attention involvement of the manager may have led to a different outcome.

This type of incident should lead to an investigation, not necessarily to prosecute the person but to examine the weaknesses in the SLBMC.

Everyday individuals and groups are given publicity for their activities. Their training and achievements. Government workers attend regional and international conference. Yet the Country still operates under very primitive conditions.
One would think they have learned something new which results in more effective and efficient government operations.
In a small country such as Antigua and Barbuda beefing up security not the solution. Effective police force who are responsive to the community’s needs. Not sitting under tress at police headquarters playing board games or watching their cell phones.

  10. But did it really happen?

A terroristic threat is allegedly made inside of a government facility yet no one calls the police but instead, an alleged witness just writes about it on the ANR website…

    Carry on Antigua…

  11. Most of the info story read is wrong,do yall know what triggered the parent,we as human all we do 8s chat and judge,r u min dey,And nobody threatened nobody bout no shooting yall just lie and love make up story.

  12. @Hmmm…and Don’t Shoot The Messenger they’re all waiting for the cameras to go live on social media hoping someone shows up with an AK-47, glock, cutlass, knife or stones to go live on social media like the anonymous script writer for the likes.

  13. @ karisa Quinland. But the person said they were on the ward at the time. They were also many witnesses.
