LETTER: Government Madness

10
Bird-Browne

Dear Editor,

I wish to address the maddest decision I have heard yet from this government. This was announced last year by former Public Works Minister Weston and then repeated by Minister Maria Browne during the Budget Debate last week.

The Government’s intention to construct a government office complex opposite Harney Motors on Factory and American Roads.

Really!!! A government complex, on a corner of one of the busiest junctions in Antigua? 500 employees will mean 500 vehicles plus customers. Where will they all park? And how will they get out of the complex onto the roads?

This will be a nightmare, made even more stressful by the importation of yet another 4,000 vehicles this past year.

So now we are up to 60,000 vehicles, including tankers, massive trucks, 18 wheelers and thousands of first time drivers on roads which have not been constructed for this type of pressure.

Of course, we have had no new network of roads built in 60 years. It is the same network of tracks that were turned into roads.

This clearly shows no vision and no planned development.

But that is Antigua.

We just accept everything. Why can’t a government complex be developed out of the built up areas – properly designed? With every development now the question of traffic and parking must be a priority.

This must be a legal part of DCA’s authority.

And while we are at it, this practice of closing off streets in St. John’s must stop, at least until parking and a shuttle service can be provided.

Then we can convert the unsightly, cesspit known as St. John’s into a pedestrian city at certain times.

The traffic situation is impossible and stressful regularly in St. John’s, much less with road closures.

Regards,

Biggs

  1. Mr Biggs, I concur with your comments.

Here again, we have a Minister of the ABLP government saying things to appeal to their supporter base, but comes across as not thought through.

Was there ANY consultation process between the public, opposition parties, and the Development Control Authority (DCA).

ABLP, YOU ARE IN GOVERNMENT, HOWEVER DO REMEMBER EVERYTHING YOU DO MUST BE EFFICIENT, COST EFFECTIVE, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY IT MUST ALWAYS BENEFIT THE COUNTRY WITH THE LEAST DISRUPTION.

Again, it begs the question, is Maria Browne really qualified enough for such an important ministerial role?

  2. And Friar’s Hill Road needs sidewalks, NOT palm trees.

Construction of sidewalks according to developed country standards was part of the original agreement for the Airport Road and Friar’s Hill Road reconstruction.

  3. Dear Miron
The government does have professional architects, engineers and planners on staff, but guess what?

They are not allowed to do their jobs as professionals. Politicians and their minions call all the shots on design issues ( even thou they have zero experience and knowledge of the subject) DCA had Clement, PWD had Lennox Weston just to name a few prominent figures.

  4. This ALP government just talks. Haven’t we figured this out yet? They have absolutely no intention of building anything. The spaces they are using are either huffed or putting money in some minion’s pocket. Ask Pixie who is collecting rent for the Friars Hill place?
Name one building they have constructed in ten years for this purpose?
Look, when these clowns get into parliament they just TALK. Chet Green made so many promises for agriculture. How many has he followed through on? Medford Nicholas had all the answers to APUA; what has he done? Just listen to them a few months ago and you will see.
Just a waste, the whole lot.

    • Mi ah tell you @ Watching. The ABLP dem chat toooo much without the appropriate actions!

If their chit chat and words were made out of concrete and water pipes, Antigua woulda fix-up long long time ago 🤣🤣🤣

  5. I d k there is a complex on qeh, I don’t see no traffic jam
Yes this government is mad but I don’t see the madness here. Obviously there will be an internal road and an exit and entrance maybe even a diagonal design
