The American state of Florida was recently struck by hurricanes. Owners of electric vehicles were told to unplug them before the hurricanes hit, and store them in a place where salt water cannot reach them.
Electric vehicles can explode upon exposure to salt water.
For our small islands surrounded by the sea, and prone to hurricanes, this is concerning. The government and private sector are both importing electric vehicles.
Should the importation of electric vehicles even be allowed, given the risk?

That’s what you waste people’s time with a nonsensical article as such? Gasoline powered vehicles can be destructive also; with a tank filled with a volatile liquid… as with all things it’s how you handle them… go back in your corner!
Writer please note:
“it’s important to note that outside of salt water flooding damage, electric vehicles actually are much less of a threat to catch fire than gas vehicles. Data from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board shows that there are approximately 25 fires for every 100,000 EVs sold. That’s in comparison to are approximately 1,530 fires for every 100,000 gas-powered vehicles sold. ” see Miami Herald Published October 11, 2024 at 11:28 AM EDT. After Hurricane Milton, a growing risk: Flooded electric cars going up in flames
The key as in everything is maintenance. Ensure, with your mechanic assistance, the batteries are kept sealed to protect them from water. If exposed get the appropriate mechanic (he can take out the battery and dry it out)
This is the ignorance being posted. So anyone with an opinion can have their stuff posted as news!? News is a joke at this point. As an expert in this field I can’t even begin to express how stupid this article is.
How many electric cars have u seen burning in Antigua?
Now how many gas engine ones have u seen burn?
Wasn’t there an article a few months ago about the higher maintenance cost and procurring of batteries?
The fire dept. will have to be trained and maybe get special equipment because a lithium fire is substantially more difficult to put out. We should also consider the power grid because California for example is looking to ban gasoline vehicles but their grid is maxed out.
ANR, why aren’t you posting my comment?
Is it to controversial — or are you in the business of suppressing information?
Is Antigua News Room is a captured entity?
They seem to now pander to the main stream narrative even when it a false one.
I would advise the writer to first go do your research on electric vehicles, then compare the safety of electric vehicles to that of their gas counterparts, which are 5 times more likely to catch fire than EV’s.
This post is just meant to invoke fear into people who are ignorant of the workings of electrical vehicles.
You shouldn’t have to tell anyone to unplug the car in a storm where there’s flooding.
Would you leave a toaster plugged in in a flood?
Although they are less likely to catch fire than gasoline cars, their fire is much more devastating. We do not have the facilities here to handle lithium battery fires which burn at an extremely high temperature for days, even submerged underwater. Many areas in Antigua have a constant salty breeze blowing through which, over time, can slowly cause corrosion and lead to fires. The same cannot be said about ICE powered cars. I believe we are putting the cart before the horse, and until something devastating happens, the facilities will not be put in place to counteract the (very real) risks associated with EVs.
(2 Cents) The main battery of an ev is sealed. The salt water only affects the battery if it’s submerged for a long period of time in which case if there’s that much water the car would burn only for a short period of time until the energy stored in the battery is discharged.
What caused that car to burn in Florida is the fact that it was plugged into a charger pumping 16-40 amps of 240 volts into the battery causing the battery to heat up, coupled with the salt from the water shorting stuff out.
In other words it was a freak accident.
Antigua is more than equipped to handle ev 🔥 because it’s no different than NYC, Fl or the rest of the world.
